Medieval iron spearhead, probably of 13th or 14th century date The spearhead is near complete, missing only a small part of the socket base and has an overall length of 279mm. The socket is circular, becoming flat at the neck with an external diameter of 22.2mm (19.6mm internal). Slight damage near the base of the socket may have occurred around a single nail hole. The seam of the socket is open near the bottom and gradually converges, and is closed 75mm from the base. The socket has an internal depth of 91.5mm. The sides of the socket are straight and converge towards the blade. The …

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Forged iron arrowhead of Medieval date, probably of 11th to 14th century date. The arrowhead is near complete, but has lost the tip and has a surviving height of 53.6mm. The arrowhead is socketed and has some damage around the socket rim, which has an external diameter of 12.7mm (9.7mm internal). The blade is leaf-shaped and has a maximum width of 17.6mm. The arrowhead is corroded and has been recently coated in a thick varnish. The arrowhead has a current weight of 10.4g. Jessop (1997, p 2-3) has highlighted the problems of ascribing function to arrowheads, beyond that of either hunti…

Object type: BUCKET
County: Cardiff
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron vessel escutcheon of uncertain date The escutcheon is near-complete and comprises a plate and integral loop, and has an overall surviving length of 101.4mm and weighs 55.0g. The plate gradually thins towards its base (2.5mm – 6.9mm) and has a convex profile suggesting it was attached to curved vessel, such as a cauldron. The plate may originally have had a lozenge shape and a rounded break at the base may suggest an attachment rivet hole. Another sub-square protrusion near the shoulder suggests another attachment rivet. The rivet on the opposing shoulder has been lost. The loo…

County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron stirrup of uncertain date, probably post medieval The Iron stirrup appears to be hand-forged from a circular-sectioned rod (of 8mm dimeter) and is complete (149mm high and weighing 118.8g). The base of the stirrup has been hammer-forged into a flat strip (87mm long, 22.0mm wide and 4mm thick). The loop for the foot is D-shaped (with internal dimensions of 92mm wide and 84mm high) and is defined at its apex by three twists of the iron rod. At the apex the loop for the harness strap is sub rectangular (34.8mm wide and 15mm high internal). The iron rod is corroded but in compar…

County: Rhondda Cynon Taf
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible Iron Age iron axehead The implement is incomplete, with some damage to the socket (with a length of 81.3mm and a weight of 64.3g). The butt is irregular but is likely to have been truncated, although possibly was not much longer (with a width of 5mm and a thickness of 2mm – 3mm). A socket was formed by forged flanges, now damaged and incomplete (giving a maximum overall depth of 11.4mm and producing a socket width of 8mm). The butt end has straight, near parallel, slightly divergent sides (with a length of 32mm and a maximum butt width of 21mm) with surviving evidence …

Spade Iron probably of medieval to post medieval date The Spade iron is of U-shaped form and is near-complete, missing one securing lug and part of the blade (with a length of 274mm, a thickness of 7mm and a weight of 579.9g). The spade iron was secured to the wooden spade with a groove, now damaged running on the interior of the iron and by the inward-facing lugs (22mm long) at the apex (where the spade has a width of 174mm). There is no suggestion of attachment rivet holes on the side arms. The interior of the spade iron suggests the dimensions of the wooden spade blade (197mm…

The sides of the socket are straight and convergent, reaching a minimum diameter (of 9.5mm x 12.8mm) beneath the blade. There no obvious attachment holes through the socket. The blade is of leaf-shaped form (51.2mm long and reaching a maximum width of 19.8mm) and appears to have had an oval s…

An incomplete wrought iron barbed arrowhead of Medieval date (c.AD 1200-1300). The arrowhead is comprised of the point, a portion of a barb and the socket with a total overall length of 74.3mm. The arrowhead is triangular in plan and likely of LMMC type 14 with long barbs that would have originally come down as far as the socket, but much of the barbs have bene lost to old damage (resulting in a maximum surviving head length of 46.1mm and width 27.1mm). The cutting edge is set at the end of a long conical socket (now packed with corrosion product) measuring 12.2mm in diameter at the ba…

An iron cannon ball, most likely of a post medieval date. The object is spherical with areas of concretion. There is corrosion and pitting to the surface, which is orange-brown in colour. Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a large iron vessel (cauldron?) consisting of a separately forged leg, plano-convex in section and with a decorative outer longitudinal ridge, and part of the vessel's base. Dimensions of surviving portion of the vessel's base 96mm x 72mm, vessel thickness 6mm, length of leg 45mm, weight 276.4 grams. Although cast iron vessels of this form were used until the early twentieth century the longitudinal ridge on the leg is similar to those decorating late medieval and post-medieval copper alloy vessel legs suggesting it may be of earlier date.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a probable iron axe, with an oval eye set within a notably wide expansion. Half of the eye, the poll and the end of the blade are missing. The front face of the surviving part of the blade is straight, while the rear, although initially straight, begins to curve back, presumably to form a wide cutting edge. Unfortunately, the loss of the front of the blade prevents confirmation of this suggestion. The thickness of the blade narrows towards the missing cutting edge suggesting that, when complete, the blade had a triangular longitudinal section. Surviving length 159mm, maximu…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of axe blade with a straight front face while the rear face, although straight at first, sweeps back to from a wide cutting edge. The axe blade has a triangular longitudinal section. Part of the cutting edge, most of the socket and the poll are missing and the remaining portion of the axe is heavily corroded. It is not possible to identify with the naked eye the weld line where one side of the socket is joined to the blade. An example of Manning's Type 2 (1985, 15-16, fig.3); however, it is not certain that this axe is Roman in date. The form of many iron tool types are parti…

Relatively slight, complete but damaged forged iron woodman's axehead. The axehead has a crescentic cutting edge, possibly worn at the top of the blade edge. The axe blade diverges to the cutting edge. The shaft-hole would have been tear shaped, but is now torn and distorted on one side. The rear of the axehead has a flat rectangular platform, which would have been used as a hammer.

A late medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy knife handle, probably of 16th-century date or slightly earlier. The knife is of scale-tang type, with two copper-alloy scale plates riveted to the integral iron tang. The iron blade of the knife has broken towards its start. No shoulder plate is present between the tang and blade. The handle was attached by three copper-alloy rivets spaced equally along its median length. The handle was decorated with floral mouldings, although little of the design survives. The end cap is expanded, flaring out compared to the scale plates, and is decorat…
