Two socketed axes (Cat. Nos. 1-2, below) were found together in the same metal-detector pit at approximate depths of 0.15-0.23m (6-9 inches) below the ground surface. A further socketed axe and a casting jet (Cat. Nos. 3 & 7, below) were also later recovered from the same metal detector pit, at approximate depths of 0.25-0.30m (10-12 inches). A complete forged copper alloy spiral finger ring of probable Iron Age to Roman date (c. 200BC-AD 410). The ring is of Guiraud Type 7 (Guiraud 1989, 195-6). The ring is made from a forged bar of copper alloy 4.3- 4.8mm diameter wrapped around to form a ring, completing two full turns. The section of the bar is circular. The internal diameter of the ring is variable with a maximum of 22.1mm. A near-complete Roman cast copper alloy brooch, of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type, dating from c. AD 80 -120. The object consists of the head and the bow of the brooch, with the axis bar and spring still intact. The pin and most of the catch plate are missing. It is irregular in plan, broadly comma shaped in profile, and irregular in cross section. An incomplete cast copper alloy pinhead of probable Roman date (c.AD 43-410). The pin is comprised of the head and a fragment of the shaft (overall height 13.0mm). The head is globular, flat on the bottom, with four intersecting incised grooves forming a flower or star decoration (external diameter 6.7mm, height 3.2mm). The shank is circular in section (diameter 3.0mm, 9.2mm long) and terminates in a transverse break.  The object has a dark green patina and weighs 1.24g. A near complete cast copper alloy and enamel Medieval harness pendant dating from 1200 to 1400 AD. The harness pendant is shield-shaped with an integrally cast loop; the front is decorated in relief blue enamel depicting a unicorn rampant.  The suspension loop is 8.5mm long with a loop hole (2.6mm in diameter) which is set 90 degrees from the shield. A complete Post Medieval copper alloy posy ring dating from c. 1600 to 1700 AD. The hoop is broadly circular in plan (it is slightly bent out of shape) and is shallow D-shaped in cross-section. There is a central vertical seam which stands proud of the rings surface. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text: I LIVE IN LOVE, in Roman uppercase lettering. The terminal of the letter I splits into two curving serifs. There is no maker’s mark. The ring has corrosion to its surface rendering it a dark reddish brown colour. There are no visible remains of silvering or gilding.

A near-complete, distorted copper alloy Colchester Derivative Polden Hill (CD PH) type brooch of Roman date (c. 75-175AD). The brooch belongs to Mackreth’s CD PH Type 5.b3.
