Medieval silver coin
A contemporary copy of a William I (1066-87) penny. Uncertain mint and moneyer.
cf. BMC 6, North 846, sword type (1079-82) but with a crude bust and the sword to the right
18.5mm - 18.7mm diam.; 0.5mm thick; 1.26g
Martin Allen says of the coin: A contemporary imitation, probably produced in south
Wales or the Welsh March (cf. Edward Besly, BNJ 86 (2016), p. 148 and
Pl. 24, no. 197). I would read the inscriptions as follows:
Obv. +IMII+D[R?]I+II
Rev. +DVNI+I[ ]IIID
