Roman copper alloy vessel or furniture leg The leg is complete and has a length of 64.3mm and a weight of 15.7g. The top of the leg has an L-shaped bracket (with a length of 11.2mm and a width of 5.3mm) to support a vessel above. Remnants of a white adhesive or solder are discernible on the surfaces of the bracket. The leg is of sub-lozenge section and has an undulating curve to the foot. The front of the leg is enhanced with moulded projections near the top and incised grooves around the mid-section. At the rear of the mid-section is an incomplete loop (7.8mm diameter), the interior …

Roman copper alloy vessel handle The handle is incomplete and is broken at one end, with a surviving length of 76.2mm and has a weight of 77.0g. The handle is deeply curved and is of lozenge section, with a thickness at the break of 9.1mm and a width of 7.4mm. At the top of the handle are zoomorphic figures, comprising a bird and horse. The seated bird, probably a duck, has a length of 37.0mm, a maximum width of 13.4mm and a height of 21.9mm. The feathers of the bird are depicted with transverse lines, forming chevrons at the rear. Roman copper alloy vessel lid The lid is complete and includes the hinge from the copper alloy vessel (with an overall length of 59.3mm, a width of 46.5mm and a weight of 36.7g). The surviving fragment from the body of the vessel is solid and is broken at both ends (with a surviving height of 20.5mm and a surviving width of 19mm). The lug flares at the base towards the vessel and is likely to have converged to a rounded spike above the hinge. Crudely cast, slightly waisted, copper alloy vessel leg. Length 41mm, width 28-33mm, thickness 18mm, weight 77.4 grams. Identifying the vessel type that this leg is from is not possible. Presumably it was either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is equally difficult as the form of the legs like this did not change from the medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95).

Complete cast copper alloy vessel leg. Part of the apparently integrally cast body of the vessel remains attached to the leg. Length 78mm, width 16-17 mm, weight 115.2 grams. Medieval to post-medieval. The surface of the leg is preferentially blackened in comparison to the inside of the vessel body; this "sooting" is a common phenomena and is due to oxidisation of the outer surface of the vessel through exposure to the cooking fire.

Fragment of a large iron vessel (cauldron?) consisting of a separately forged leg, plano-convex in section and with a decorative outer longitudinal ridge, and part of the vessel's base. Dimensions of surviving portion of the vessel's base 96mm x 72mm, vessel thickness 6mm, length of leg 45mm, weight 276.4 grams. Although cast iron vessels of this form were used until the early twentieth century the longitudinal ridge on the leg is similar to those decorating late medieval and post-medieval copper alloy vessel legs suggesting it may be of earlier date.

Pot mend of a steeply sided vessel, crudely cast. Unusual metal type - microscopic examination suggests that it is a heavily leaded copper alloy which may have a tinned surface. Most pot mends are made from straight lead alloys and that this example has been made from a leaded copper alloy suggests that it may be a mend for a copper alloy vessel rather than a ceramic pot. Close dating is not possible but a medieval or post-medieval date is most likely. Dimensions 100m x 44mm x 4-8mm.

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout shaped in the form of a dog’s head with a short barrel protruding from the animal’s mouth, probably of 15th or 16th century date. The dog is modelled with apparently closed eyes, small but upright ears and a slight crest on the back of its head. The spout illustrates no evidence of an attachment device, suggesting it was welded or soldered to the vessel. The spout is paralleled by examples from the moat at Cardiff Castle (Lewis 1991, 4, fig 8A)and an unprovenanced example (Bailey 1997, 57-58 no 5).

Possible fragment from a vessel mount, possibly originating from an organic vessel, the contextual placing of the find may suggest a Roman date for the find. The mount has an expanded rim with a series of transverse ridges over the top. The rim has a slight plain inturn, before a low moulding defining a decorative panel consisting of a moulded vertical line, which meets a pair of moulded diagonal lines at the top. There is no obvious means of attachment. The rear of the piece is plain.

Rim fragment of a vessel, probably of Late Medieval date. The fragment is relatively thin and is suggestive of a vessel with a comparatively small rim diameter (originally approximately 70mm), possibly suggesting a fragment from a jug or tankard, similar to a mid 14th century tankard found at Caerphilly Castle (Lewis, 1978). The vessel has an incised or turned decorative band on the exterior, at the position of slight shoulder, two narrower incised lines flank the band.

Copper-alloy leg from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel, perhaps a cauldron or skillet. This is a short rectangular-sectioned leg with a bevelled base resulting in the bottom of the leg forming a narrow edge. The leg has broken at the junction with the body of the vessel, and rises to become expanded, with a concave upper surface. The patina and corrosion of the fragment suggests burning, as would be expected with a cooking vessel.

Cast copper alloy ewer or laver spout of late Medieval date, probably dating from the 15-16th centuries. The spout is shaped in the form of a duck's head. Many ewer spouts are in the form of dog's heads such as the example recovered from Cardiff Castle (Lewis 1991, 4, fig. 8A), although duck head spouts have been recorded. The duck eyes are defined by an incised circular ring, the bill is open with a protruding short barrel emerging from the animal's mouth. The top of the animal's head is decorated with short incised lines at the centre and above the brows.
