Roman copper alloy vessel or furniture leg The leg is complete and has a length of 64.3mm and a weight of 15.7g. The top of the leg has an L-shaped bracket (with a length of 11.2mm and a width of 5.3mm) to support a vessel above. Remnants of a white adhesive or solder are discernible on the surfaces of the bracket. The leg is of sub-lozenge section and has an undulating curve to the foot. The front of the leg is enhanced with moulded projections near the top and incised grooves around the mid-section. At the rear of the mid-section is an incomplete loop (7.8mm diameter), the interior …

Roman copper alloy vessel handle The handle is incomplete and is broken at one end, with a surviving length of 76.2mm and has a weight of 77.0g. The handle is deeply curved and is of lozenge section, with a thickness at the break of 9.1mm and a width of 7.4mm. At the top of the handle are zoomorphic figures, comprising a bird and horse. The seated bird, probably a duck, has a length of 37.0mm, a maximum width of 13.4mm and a height of 21.9mm. The feathers of the bird are depicted with transverse lines, forming chevrons at the rear. The horse is depicted on its back and is only represe…

Copper alloy inscribed plate, probably of Roman period date The plate is fragmentary and has a surviving length of 27.5mm surviving height of 20.9mm and a weight of 6.9g. The plate has a thickness of 2.5-2.8mm. The base of the fragment has an original edge, while the other edges are broken. The plate is curved across both its length and height. On the front of the plate is deeply incised lettering and decoration. The letter R is discernible after a ring-and –dot motif. Both appear to be within a double curved border outside of which is a hatched design. The plate has broken along th…

Roman copper alloy vessel lid The lid is complete and includes the hinge from the copper alloy vessel (with an overall length of 59.3mm, a width of 46.5mm and a weight of 36.7g). The surviving fragment from the body of the vessel is solid and is broken at both ends (with a surviving height of 20.5mm and a surviving width of 19mm). The lug flares at the base towards the vessel and is likely to have converged to a rounded spike above the hinge. The hinge comprises two perforated lugs on the vessel (with a depth of 9.3mm and a width of 10.3mm), flanking a single central lug on the lid. A…

Crudely cast, slightly waisted, copper alloy vessel leg. Length 41mm, width 28-33mm, thickness 18mm, weight 77.4 grams. Identifying the vessel type that this leg is from is not possible. Presumably it was either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is equally difficult as the form of the legs like this did not change from the medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95).

Several cast copper alloy vessel fragments including the basal end of two vessel legs form different vessels but both plano-convex in section and with decorative outer longitudinal ribs; cast copper alloy rim fragments from four different wide and steep sided vessels (probably cauldrons); and a cast copper alloy rim fragment from a wide and steep sided vessel which includes an integrally cast suspension loop, the upper part of which contains a pronounced wear facet.

Complete cast copper alloy vessel leg. Part of the apparently integrally cast body of the vessel remains attached to the leg. Length 78mm, width 16-17 mm, weight 115.2 grams. Medieval to post-medieval. The surface of the leg is preferentially blackened in comparison to the inside of the vessel body; this "sooting" is a common phenomena and is due to oxidisation of the outer surface of the vessel through exposure to the cooking fire.

Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a wide and steep sided vessel (probably a cauldron). Surviving vessel depth 37mm, thickness 3.5-4.5mm, weight 42.1 grams. Medieval or post-medieval in date. Medieval cast copper alloy vessels are discussed by Egan (1998, 161-169); several post-medieval examples are noted by Margeson (1993, 90-94).

Cast copper alloy vessel foot. The foot has a rib on its external surface and tapers to a rounded point. The upper part of the casting is missing. Vessel feet are not uncommon detector finds (Bailey 1997, 36). Although examples which terminate in turned-out bases or paws are the most common type, examples with rounded tips are not unknown. Surviving length 79mm, max width (surviving) 35mm, max surviving thickness 16mm. Fifteenth to seventeenth century probably [i.e. Late Medieval - Early Post-Medieval]. Parallels: Lewis 1978, 36, no.45 (skillet); and Lewis 1978, 32, no.38 (Cauldron)

Pot mend of a steeply sided vessel, crudely cast. Unusual metal type - microscopic examination suggests that it is a heavily leaded copper alloy which may have a tinned surface. Most pot mends are made from straight lead alloys and that this example has been made from a leaded copper alloy suggests that it may be a mend for a copper alloy vessel rather than a ceramic pot. Close dating is not possible but a medieval or post-medieval date is most likely. Dimensions 100m x 44mm x 4-8mm.

Cast copper alloy vessel leg, sub-triangular in section, which tapers towards its angled foot. The foot is separated from the main part of the leg by a transverse ridge in the angle. The weight of the vessel leg suggests that the copper alloy was leaded. Possibly the leg of a tripod ewer. Close dating is difficult because the form of the vessel legs remained similar from the late medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95); however, the distinctive transverse ridge in the angle of the foot and leg of this example is closely paralleled by a vessel leg recovered from a …

Copper alloy vessel escutcheon and handle, probably of Roman period date. The handle comprises a looped escutcheon attached to the lower part of a handle. The rear or inside of the escutcheon has a rectangular plate (44.54 x 46.6mm) with a trapezoidal knop at the base (14.2mm long and 13.92mm wide). There are three perforations (of 3mm diameter) at the base of the escutcheon, two at the corners and one irregularly placed within the knop. The interior of the escutcheon has a shield-shaped or sub-triangular silvered mark (29.3mm high and 30.5mm wide), presumably as a result of a lost dec…

Cast copper alloy cauldron or skillet leg of Medieval date, probably dating from 13th - 16th century. The front of the leg has a prominent central rib and the rear of the leg has two chamfered edges. The fragment widens to an expanded foot. The leg has broken before the body of the vessel. The leg exhibits heavy carbon deposits as a result of repeated burning, as would be expected on the surface of a cooking vessel.
