Roman copper alloy vessel or furniture leg The leg is complete and has a length of 64.3mm and a weight of 15.7g. The top of the leg has an L-shaped bracket (with a length of 11.2mm and a width of 5.3mm) to support a vessel above. Remnants of a white adhesive or solder are discernible on the surfaces of the bracket. The leg is of sub-lozenge section and has an undulating curve to the foot. The front of the leg is enhanced with moulded projections near the top and incised grooves around the mid-section. Roman copper alloy vessel lid The lid is complete and includes the hinge from the copper alloy vessel (with an overall length of 59.3mm, a width of 46.5mm and a weight of 36.7g). The surviving fragment from the body of the vessel is solid and is broken at both ends (with a surviving height of 20.5mm and a surviving width of 19mm). Crudely cast, slightly waisted, copper alloy vessel leg. Length 41mm, width 28-33mm, thickness 18mm, weight 77.4 grams. Identifying the vessel type that this leg is from is not possible. Presumably it was either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is equally difficult as the form of the legs like this did not change from the medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95).

Complete cast copper alloy vessel leg. Part of the apparently integrally cast body of the vessel remains attached to the leg. Length 78mm, width 16-17 mm, weight 115.2 grams. Medieval to post-medieval. The surface of the leg is preferentially blackened in comparison to the inside of the vessel body; this "sooting" is a common phenomena and is due to oxidisation of the outer surface of the vessel through exposure to the cooking fire.

Fragment of a large iron vessel (cauldron?) consisting of a separately forged leg, plano-convex in section and with a decorative outer longitudinal ridge, and part of the vessel's base. Dimensions of surviving portion of the vessel's base 96mm x 72mm, vessel thickness 6mm, length of leg 45mm, weight 276.4 grams. Although cast iron vessels of this form were used until the early twentieth century the longitudinal ridge on the leg is similar to those decorating late medieval and post-medieval copper alloy vessel legs suggesting it may be of earlier date.

Cast copper alloy vessel foot. The foot has a rib on its external surface and tapers to a rounded point. The upper part of the casting is missing. Vessel feet are not uncommon detector finds (Bailey 1997, 36). Although examples which terminate in turned-out bases or paws are the most common type, examples with rounded tips are not unknown. Surviving length 79mm, max width (surviving) 35mm, max surviving thickness 16mm. Fifteenth to seventeenth century probably [i.e. Late Medieval - Early Post-Medieval]. Pot mend of a steeply sided vessel, crudely cast. Unusual metal type - microscopic examination suggests that it is a heavily leaded copper alloy which may have a tinned surface. Most pot mends are made from straight lead alloys and that this example has been made from a leaded copper alloy suggests that it may be a mend for a copper alloy vessel rather than a ceramic pot. Close dating is not possible but a medieval or post-medieval date is most likely. Dimensions 100m x 44mm x 4-8mm.
