Cast copper alloy vessel escutcheon or mount in the form of a bird’s head. The escutcheon has a lower flat panel representing the breast of the bird and decorated with incised diagonal lines meeting at a central vertical line, beneath each of the diagonal lines are a row of chevrons to indicate the feathers. At the top of the panel is a circular drilled hole, possibly to hold a handle. The top of the perforation corresponds to the level of a step in the mount, presumably to house the vessel rim. The top of the mount is in the form of a pointed bird’s head with incised oval-shaped e…

Rim fragment of a vessel, probably of Late Medieval date. The fragment is relatively thin and is suggestive of a vessel with a comparatively small rim diameter (originally approximately 70mm), possibly suggesting a fragment from a jug or tankard, similar to a mid 14th century tankard found at Caerphilly Castle (Lewis, 1978). The vessel has an incised or turned decorative band on the exterior, at the position of slight shoulder, two narrower incised lines flank the band.

Copper-alloy leg from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel, perhaps a cauldron or skillet. This is a short rectangular-sectioned leg with a bevelled base resulting in the bottom of the leg forming a narrow edge. The leg has broken at the junction with the body of the vessel, and rises to become expanded, with a concave upper surface. The patina and corrosion of the fragment suggests burning, as would be expected with a cooking vessel.

Copper alloy zoomorphic mount, probably from a vessel handle or lid and of Early Roman date. The mount depicts a sitting quadruped with its front legs extending out in front of the body, and possibly representing a bear or a dog. The animal is naturalistic in style. The hair is depicted by incised lines over the body, except for the top of the back, where a rectangular panel is decorated with two incised diagonal crosses divided by a single incised line. On the rear of the animal there is an integral flat circular perforated lug covered with iron corrosion, and possibly representing a …

Near complete copper alloy escutcheon from a hanging bowl or bucket, probably of Late Iron Age date, C. 50 BC to 100 AD. The escutcheon body is of globular form with an integral large incomplete loop, presumably to secure a handle. The body of the mount appears slightly domed, and is decorated with a motif consisting of two high raised moulded opposed semicircular arcs, with a slight break in-between the two. Beneath the raised motif is a circular attachment hole, placed off centre and surrounded with iron corrosion. It is possible to suggest this means of attachment is a secondary re…

Cast copper alloy ewer or laver spout of late Medieval date, probably dating from the 15-16th centuries. The spout is shaped in the form of a duck's head. Many ewer spouts are in the form of dog's heads such as the example recovered from Cardiff Castle (Lewis 1991, 4, fig. 8A), although duck head spouts have been recorded. The duck eyes are defined by an incised circular ring, the bill is open with a protruding short barrel emerging from the animal's mouth. The top of the animal's head is decorated with short incised lines at the centre and above the brows.
