Two fragments of Pewter or copper alloy- one possible vessel rim. Little diagnostic but maybe a medieval or post medieval vessel. A fragment 46.4mm long, 19.8mmwide and a maximum of 1.5mm thick, weighs 5.07g. The fragment has a channel beaten in lengthways with flanking ridges. One long edge is thinner that the other- 0.9mm vs 1.3mm. Possible vessel rim, but every edge is a break, and no other diagnostic features. Form of the sheet gives little indication as to shape due to distortion. A fragment 33mm long, 19.1mm wide, maximum 2.7mm thick, weighs 6.42g. Every edge is a b…

A fragmentary cast copper alloy vessel fragment of Medieval or Post Medieval date (c.1300-1700). The fragment comprises the foot of a pot leg, likely for a cooking vessel (38.8mm long, 50.8mm at the bottom of the foot, 13.9mm max thickness). The foot is sub-trapezoidal in section with a raised central ridge running the length. Traces of black coating preserve on the surface. The object is a mottled green patina with patches of orange corrosion suggesting iron was present in the deposition environment and weighs 99.22g. Similar objects are recorded on the PAS database e.g. SWYOR-…

A fragmentary cast copper alloy vessel handle from a pot or skillet, likely of Post Medieval date. The handle is cylindrical, circular in plan and measures 98.7mm in length. The handle is thickest at the end with a max diameter of 19.1mm. The end of the handle is smooth and flat with no evidence of percussion marks. The handle tapers gradually from the end and flattens slightly before curving towards the break resulting in a thickness of 12.8mm and width of 14.8mm. The broken end retains some original surface (4.8mm from external surface to break surface) which informs on the way the …

Iron Age copper alloy zoomorphic vessel mount or cup handle of 1st or 2nd century AD date The mount depicts a bird, probably a goose and is incomplete, broken at one end (with a surviving length of 28.5mm, a surviving depth of 23.0mm and a weight of 17.5g). The terminal of the mount is in the form of a bird’s head, with a protruding pointed beak of subtriangular section (3.6mm long). The start of the beak was defined by grooves, now corroded. The head of the goose is globular (with a maximum diameter of 11.5mm) and the eyes are inset with bright blue glass spherical beads (of 1…

The two silver items are both fragmentary: Fragment 1: a small rectangular piece of hack-silver, cut from a silver vessel. All four edges have been cut, and there is a hesitant transverse cut running inside one of the longer edges. Both faces of the silver are plain, and the fragment is flat. Maximum length 14mm x width 9.1mm x thickness 2.6mm. Weight 2.27g. Fragment 2: small 'pie-slice' fragment from a circular lid or vessel rim, with a plain bevelled edge. The surviving rim diameter can be estimated at about 9-10cm. Maximum length 15.6mm x width 16.45 x maximum thickness…

Probable vessel fragment, possibly a handle of Early Medieval date The object is incomplete, broken at one end (with a surviving length of 101.9mm and a weight of 197.7g). The possible handle is of D-shaped section at the break (26.8mm wide and 14.7mm thick) and has straight, slightly converging sides towards the terminal. The face is near flat, slightly concave along its length and is decorated with a panel within a raised border, comprising an interlace design in sunken relief. It is likely that the interlace depicts two intertwined beasts and appears to have a rear facing head a…

Copper alloy zoomorphic mount, probably from a vessel handle or lid and of Early Roman date. The mount depicts a sitting quadruped with its front legs extending out in front of the body, and possibly representing a bear or a dog. The animal is naturalistic in style. The hair is depicted by incised lines over the body, except for the top of the back, where a rectangular panel is decorated with two incised diagonal crosses divided by a single incised line. On the rear of the animal there is an integral flat circular perforated lug covered with iron corrosion, and possibly representing a …

Rim fragment of a vessel, probably of Late Medieval date. The fragment is relatively thin and is suggestive of a vessel with a comparatively small rim diameter (originally approximately 70mm), possibly suggesting a fragment from a jug or tankard, similar to a mid 14th century tankard found at Caerphilly Castle (Lewis, 1978). The vessel has an incised or turned decorative band on the exterior, at the position of slight shoulder, two narrower incised lines flank the band.

Cast copper alloy vessel escutcheon or mount in the form of a bird’s head. The escutcheon has a lower flat panel representing the breast of the bird and decorated with incised diagonal lines meeting at a central vertical line, beneath each of the diagonal lines are a row of chevrons to indicate the feathers. At the top of the panel is a circular drilled hole, possibly to hold a handle. The top of the perforation corresponds to the level of a step in the mount, presumably to house the vessel rim. The top of the mount is in the form of a pointed bird’s head with incised oval-shaped e…

Cast copper alloy cauldron or skillet leg of Medieval date, probably dating from 13th - 16th century. The front of the leg has a prominent central rib and the rear of the leg has two chamfered edges. The fragment widens to an expanded foot. The leg has broken before the body of the vessel. The leg exhibits heavy carbon deposits as a result of repeated burning, as would be expected on the surface of a cooking vessel.
