An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel handle of probable Late Iron Age or Roman date (1st century BC-1st century AD). The head is flat and sub-oval (14.3mm x 15.3mm, 2.5mm thick) with a sub-oval perforation (7mm x 5.8mm). The shaft is 7.0mm wide and 2.5mm thick at the bottom of the head and gradually extends to the break where it reaches a width of 11.9mm and 3.7mm thick. The shaft is bent 15.7mm down from the head giving the object an overall distorted length of 62.5mm. Some filing marks are visible on the reverse. The object is a medium green patina with patches of bright green bron…

An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel foot of Roman date. The object is crudely pelta shaped, with a central triangular projection and flanking lobes on one edge, the other being convex. The object is covered by soil, with areas of corrosion disrupting the dark green patinated surface. One end of the object is broken, leading to a reduced length. Pelta shaped vessel feet are well documented, with many examples recorded on the PAS database (e.g. PUBLIC-749A73 and ESS-8C8A14), and excavated from Roman contexts such as in Caerleon (Brewer, 1986, pg. 173). They are believed to have…

Copper alloy vessel handle, possibly from a jug of Roman date The handle is complete (with a length of 68.3mm, a depth of 19mm and a weight of 35.7g) but no part of the container vessel survives. The handle is of S-shaped form and has flattened attachment points on each end. The upper, oval attachment point (14.5mm long x 9.4m m wide) has an outward angle, whereas the lower, sub-triangular attachment point (12.5mm long x 12.5m m wide) is near-vertical. The handle is of oval section, widening to its furthest point (where it has a width and thickness of 12.5mm and 9.9mm respective…

Roman copper alloy vessel handle from a jug, probably of 1st to 3rd century AD date The handle is fragmentary, missing the handle grip (with a surviving length of 37.0mm and a weight of 18.2g). The handle was originally fitted with a lid, hinged between twin open lugs on the upper part of the handle, now damaged (with a width of 11.1mm, an opening 4mm wide and a height of 7.2mm). Beneath the hinge are two curved arms, now damaged and truncated (with a surviving width of 23.9mm). The arms would have been soldered to the rim of the vessel (suggesting a rim diameter of approximately…

The plate lid is thinnest around the edge (with a thickness of 1.3mm) and has a cast raised circular boss (of 22.3mm diameter, where the lid has a thickness of 3.0mm – 3.5mm). At the centre of the circle is an integral circular-sectioned handle lug (10.1mm diameter at its base, 11.9mm high and with an overall depth of 14.9mm). The top face…

At the apex is an integral loop of sub-circular section (l6.7mm high, 16.3mm wide, 9.3mm internal diameter and 2.9mm – 5.4mm sectional diameter). The interior of the loop has wear facets discernible on the upper part of the loop interior, presumably the result of rubbing from the missing handle. Beneath the loop …

Copper alloy vessel mount of uncertain date, possibly Roman The mount is of looped form, probably representing the inner part of a hinge (with an overall length of 41.9mm and a weight of 13.6g). The attachment plate is of elongated lozenge form (with a length of 35.3mm, a width of 14.7mm and a thickness of 2.5mm - 3.7mm), which is slightly wedged, thinnest opposite the hinge. The mount was attached to the vessel by a single iron rivet, which is partially preserved (giving a surviving depth of 6.3mm). The opposite face has carefully bevelled edges and the iron rivet does not appear …
