Description of object: Gold finger-ring with a D-shaped cross-section. Externally undecorated, the flat inner face is engraved in Gothic textura (black-letter) script. The engraving appears inexpert (or corrected) in the centre, and so the reading is not clear.
All interpretations agree on the first letter as i and the last two as lt. It seems most likely that it is in English and is to be read leelt, 'loyalty' (leelte is an attested Middle English spelling). It may be that the engraver perhaps intended to embellish the 'ee' with a truelove-knot, resulting in the untidiness in the…

Silver bezel of a finger ring containing an orangey-red, cornelian, intaglio. The edge of the bezel is decorated by a line of triangles running round its bottom edge and the back by an engraved floral pattern. The intaglio depicts a winged male figure, probably Cupid, a large bunch of grapes and an animal, probably a hare. The intaglio would appear to be Roman, depicting Cupid, a bunch of grapes and a hare. The same combination can be seen on an intaglio from Bath (Henig 1978, 200 no.113) where cupid is holding a bunch of grapes and a hare is jumping up to reach it. On the present int…

Small gold, or gold alloy, ring of keeled form with notched shoulders, which form the upper part of the hoop, projecting at an angle to the bezel. The bezel contains a plain, sub-circular boss and, on one side only, a perforated sub-semicircular flange, which gives the bezel a decidedly asymmetrical appearance. The lower part of the hoop is plano-convex in section. The ring is distorted and worn, possibly as a result of cleaning. There are no discernible hallmarks or other features. External diameter 15-16mm, internal diameter 11-12.5mm, weight 2.8 grams. The ring is too small to be a …

Plain ring which is cast from a copper alloy and has a near plano-convex section with its inner edge being flat while its outside consists of a raised central cordon with a distinct medial ridge and short flanged edges. The flanged edges of the ring are badly damaged but show no sign of preferential wear which could be expected of the ring was an item of harness. It is large for a finger ring, having an internal diameter of 21.5mm and an external diameter of 28mm; however, the inside is worn smooth in a manner consistent with the wear on a finger ring which has been removed and replac…

Near complete gold mourning finger ring of Post-Medieval date. The ring is distorted but is otherwise in good condition. The hoop comprises of four S-shaped barbed scrolls carrying an inscription on the exterior. The first S-scroll is shorter than the others and simply carries the letter W. The next S-scroll has: HARRISON, followed by: OB2SEPT, and finally: 1761AE69. Indicating the finger ring was to commemorate W. Harrison, who died on the 2nd September 1761, aged 69. The ring would have been commissioned and worn by the deceased’s spouse or child.
The S-scrolls are now plain, but…

Bezel from a gilt or silvered copper alloy finger ring of Early Post-Medieval date. The raised cast design depicts a cuffed hand emerging from each side of the hoop and gripping a central heart. Two flowers emerge from the top of the heart and are flattened by a crown. The remnant of the hoop has the beginnings of an incised design, but not enough survives to determine if it represented decoration or an inscription. Traces of gilding or silvering survive on areas over the surface of the ring.

Cast copper alloy finger ring of Roman date. The hoop and particularly the bezel is comparatively thin for Roman rings. The hoop is plain and expands towards the bezel. The oval intaglio or glass setting is missing and was glued to the surface of the bezel, rather than being set within a recessed cell. The intaglio was surrounded by a faceted border on the ring, and elsewhere is plain. The ring has some distortion in the hoop.
