Two lead discs of uncertain function, likely of Roman date. The find consists of two lead discs, sub circular in plan, one with a (now partially flattened) turned up edge a pie crust, the other roughly flat. Due to the softness of the lead, both halves are damaged and distorted, meaning that exact original forms are uncertain. Each of the halves has been hammered using a hammer with a reticulated face, leaving marks very similar to the those described in “Manning, W.H. 1995. Report on the Excavations at Usk 1965-1976. The Roman Small Finds, plates XXXI, XXXII and XXXIII, pp31…

Copper alloy anthropomorphic cast head of uncertain date The solid cast head is complete but has broken around the neck (with a surviving length of 39.5mm and a weight of 112.6g). The head is crudely but skilfully moulded and was clearly cast from a clay or wax pattern, as evidenced by the soft ‘plastic’ moulding marks. The head is of an older male and is depicted without hair and the ears are evident as curved raised wedges. The raised brows are particularly prominent as is the wide and clearly defined nose. The recessed eyes are outlined with grooves and with a central ind…

A fragment of cast copper alloy and enamel object of unknown purpose, but certainly of Roman date (c. 43-410 AD). The object represents only a fragment of an unknown object, ending in breaks at both ends (the sides appear to be damaged original edges). The object is very broadly rectangular in shape, though the longer edges are concave. These edges are 12.3mm wide in the middle, and 20.17mm at the top and 21.2mm wide at the bottom. The object runs in a slight curve, with concave reverse and convex front. The broken top edge of the object projects slightly more than the bottom. The rev…

A fragment of a copper alloy unidentified artefact, possibly a brooch, and Roman in age. The fragment has a hollow back and iron corrosion which resembles springs, this is at the widest point of the object (10.8mm). The sides then taper to a width of 1.7mm, the narrowest point in the fragment, right above the flared foot (3.8mm). On the front of the object, at the centre of the widest point, there are the remains of a stud where a vertical line coming from the foot and a horizontal line meet. The fragment has a rough green and purple patina, and signs of iron corrosion on the back.

A lead object of unknown function and date.  The object comprises three rods joined at the centre to make a three-dimensional shape with six cylindrical rods projecting in different directions. The object has been damaged with some of the rods bent, but would have projected from the centre at right angles. Although these objects are commonly found, they are poorly understood. Because these objects are sometimes found in the same field as lead bullets/buckshot, it has been suggested that these could be caltrop, a spiked metal device thrown on the ground to impede wheeled vehicles…

A hammered gold sheet of uncertain date. The sheet has a maximum length of 51.4mm, width of 39.3mm, 0.7mm thick and weighs 14.76g. The sheet is lacking any diagnostic features so the use and date cannot be determined. Small percussion marks on the surface indicate the sheet was intentionally flattened before being deposited, discarded, or lost. Due to the uncertainty of the date, the object is not considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
