A reform of the coinage in AD348 (the 1100th anniversary of Rome's foundation) introduced new, larger, small change of several designs, which all proclaimed FEL TEMP REPARATIO (roughly translates as 'happy times are here again'). Poor supply to Britain during the 350s led to widespread copying, mostly of the 'soldier and fallen horseman' type like this example. Although the counterfeits are much smaller than the coins they copy, and once thought to be fifth century in date as a consequence, archaeological excavation has demonstrated the counterfeit copies to be contemporary with their prototypes (Besly 1997, 13).
