Decorative copper alloy fitting or mount of uncertain purpose, probably of Roman date. The fitting has two triangular cells filled with blue enamel either side of a plain and rectangular panel. The panel has a circular drilled hole which is positioned off-centre. On the rear of the piece are two T-shaped (one damaged) lugs, presumably to aid attachment. The rear of the hole is chamfered or countersunk and exhibits evidence of iron corrosion, implying an iron attachment rivet. Analysis of the enamel using a scanning electron microscope indicates the enamel is consistent with those used …

Copper alloy strap hooked fitting, possibly associated with a sword belt, probably of 16th or 17th century date. The mount has scrolled foliate decoration on its face. It would have had two suspension loops, one is now broken. The mount has an elaborate shape with trifoliate terminal and widens to the mid-point where it becomes waisted either side of the attachment loops. The mount is likely to have had three attachment holes, one at each terminal and one in the centre, one of the holes retains an iron pin. The mount has an old break at one end, and has broken into two pieces recently.…

This would appear to be a cast belt mount of triangular form with two opposing lugs on the sides near the top, and a more substantial lozenge shaped projection on the base. The mount has a central triangular opening. The apex of the mount is slightly expanded into a relatively long thin lozenge motif. The surface decoration has eroded but seems to have been a hatched design in low relief contained within a border. There are organic remnants surviving on the reverse of the mount consisting of a coarse wool weave over a leather backing. The wool is observable through the central opening…

Treasure 2008. Wales : 08.21 The strap-end is in the form of a moulded rod, expanding slightly to form a bifurcated shank. It is broken across the hole for the rivet that would have secured it to the end of a leather strap. Functionally strap-ends existed to reinforce the free ends of leather belts and straps, such as the end of a belt opposite from the buckle, and in some instances to provide some extra weight to help the strap or belt-end hang properly. However, there was also a strong decorative element to them. Similar strap-ends, made of copper alloy, have been found on Roman…

Cast copper alloy forked spacer from a composite strap-end with curved tapering arms and a semi-cylindrical knop. Length 37.5mm, maximum width 18mm, width of knop 12mm, weight 3.3 grams. Studies from London suggest that composite strap-ends with forked spacers are a type which was apparently not introduced prior to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 145). Following their introduction the type was used throughout the remainder of the Middle Ages and possibly later. A medieval date for this example is probable.

Medieval copper alloy strap-end of single sheet type, folded widthways and of late 13th to late 15th century date The strap-end is complete and of rectangular form (with a length of 20.9mm, a width of 12.2mm and a weight of 4.0g) made of folded sheet copper alloy. The strap was secured by a single separate rivet near the attachment end, which remains in place and appears more neatly finished on the front face. The attachment end remains open (with a gap of 2.6mm and a depth of 4.9mm). The sheet plate is both longer and thicker on the front plate (with a thickness of 1.2mm at the …

Description A copper alloy fitting of likely Medieval date (c. AD 1240-1450). The object is semi-conical in plan with one straight edge and the other curving to a rounded point with a single central rivet at the straight end. The surface is corroded so detail is uncertain, but the reverse has traces of a grooved border and appears tinned to a silvery sheen, so this may have been originally duplicated on the obverse. The metal is an uneven mid-green patina with areas of silver colour on one side. The object is likely a plate from a composite strap end with the other plate an…
