Hinged, copper alloy T-shaped bow brooch, possibly an example of a Lower Severn sub-type (Hull's type 104). The brooch has wide tubular rings which taper towards their ends. The wings are decorated with transverse and diagonal grooves as well as a waisted moulding towards their ends and a terminal moulding embellished with transverse incised lines. The wings accommodate a pivot for the hinged pin mechanism. Flat, comma-like mouldings or "appendages" are present either side of the bow adjacent to the wings. The bow, which is widest at the head and tapers to a point, forms one continuous…

Fragment of a bow brooch consisting of the lower part of a flat narrow tapering bow, slightly curved in profile, embellished with a shallow channel adjacent to each edge. Part of small catch-plate survives. Surviving length 36mm, surviving maximum width 6.5mm, weight 1.5 grams. The simple form of the flat bow and small catch-plate suggest that this was probably part of a Strip Bow brooch. Strip Bow brooches are a British hinged type, derived from the Aucissa and Hod Hill types, which date to the mid first century AD (Hattatt 1985, 68). Most examples of the type are manufactured from c…

Leaded copper alloy cast saucer brooch from the Early Anglo Saxon period. The brooch is circular with an angled rim defining the saucer profile. The decoration is confined to the flat plate and consists of a central device of a geometric four-pointed floral design, the interior of each petal is divided along its length. Six raised concentric circles enclose the central design. The third, fourth and fifth circles (from the centre) are interrupted by two opposing scroll based designs, likely to be stylised zoomorphs. The simpler C-like design may represent a snake, while the more elabor…

Fragment from the head of a bow brooch, of Wroxeter type. The top of the bow is slender with two longitudinal ribs, dividing the bow into three cells each containing the characteristic alternating enamel design. The (now) orange enamel survives relatively well, but there is poor survival of the corresponding enamel, traces suggest a (now) dark red colour. The remnant of a plate begins at the trumpet-like head, but has broken before the perforation. The brooch employed a spring mechanism, which survives and has been discoloured by the corrosion of the iron axis bar. The catch plate and…
