Derivative trumpet-headed brooch of the disc and trumpet type. The bilateral, six coil, spring is accommodated in a recessed hollow set in the rear of the head while the axis bar is held in place by two perforated lugs on either side of the head (type N cf. Hattatt 1982, 49). The bow is straight, with a raised disc set mid-way along its length and terminates in a pseudo-penannular loop. The brooch is incomplete: the chord, pin, part of the solid catch-plate, the lugs set either side of the mid-bow disc and the fixed chain loop surmounting the head of the brooch are missing. Romano-British, copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch of the Polden Hills type. The brooch contains a bilateral spring of ten coils whose overhead chord is held in place by a simple rearward-facing hook. A copper alloy axis bar passes through the coils of the spring and is held by pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings (cf. Type L Hattatt 1982, 49, table 2). The wings are semi-cylindrical and both accommodate and hide from view the spring mechanism. The ends of the wings are decorated with moulded "knurled" ribs set adjacent to the pierced circular plates. Flat circular …

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Dolphin or Polden Hill type and dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing the lower bow, the majority of the wings and the spring. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by either a rearward claw or a Polden Hill arrangement, since the wing terminals no longer survive it is now difficult to determine which type of arrangement was used. The head of the bow is comparatively large (12.5x14.5mm) and was decorated with a central raised V-shaped crest, possibly covered in punched marks. The bow has a D-shaped section and emerges…

A silver brooch, fashioned from a groat (fourpenny piece) of King Edward I, 1272-1307. The coin brooch takes the form of a disc brooch, diameter 29mm. On the reverse, the side visible when worn, are five collets - one central, the others evenly spaced round the rim, at 12 o'clock, etc, as viewed, in varying states of preservation; these presumably originally held glass, enamel or coloured stones, though none survives and no remains of adhesive material have been detected. The brooch has not been cleaned but this face appears to have been gilded. On the obverse are the fragmentary re…

The cast brooch frame is near-complete but the pin is missing and the frame is comparatively insubstantial (with an overall length of 57.6mm, an overall width of 62.2mm and a weight of 10.6g). The oval hoop (58.8mm external width) is of flattened-oval section (3.4mm wide and 1.9mm - 2.4mm thick), widening slightly as it approaches the terminals. There is no decoration evident on the hoop but there is an impact groove near the left terminal, possibly from a hammer blow. There is a slight step from the hoop to the integral terminals extending as far as an incised border, giving the impr…

The object is a small silver annular brooch with niello decoration on both sides of the frame, which is circular in cross-section. The frame decoration comprises at least three groups transverse lines on both sides, all inlaid with niello. The pin shaft is incised with a 'wriggle work' zig-zag line on each facet. The wrap-around head of the pin securing it to the annular frame of the brooch is plain. There is a small 'bar' at the junction of pin shaft and head (width 5mm), to prevent snagging. The annular frame is distorted. External frame diameters 18.6 x 12.6mm; frame thickness 1.1mm…
