Cast incomplete copper alloy Trumpet brooch of 1st- 2nd Century AD date. The characteristic flaring head has two slight lips on the edges. The rear of the head has a single lug to secure the spring mechanism, which illustrates iron corrosion, suggesting an iron axis bar was employed. The bow has a slight central rib running along its length. The decoration consists of a pronounced central moulding carrying a design of diagonals or V-motifs, between two lesser mouldings and bounded on top and bottom by an incised ‘V’. The foot of the brooch is missing, but the remnant of the catch p…

Unusual incomplete bow brooch, which has lost its foot and pin and has suffered some damage to the wings. The brooch appears to carry characteristics of both the Hod Hill and T-shaped brooch types. The bow is hollow on the reverse (better paralleled with Hod Hill variants) and is parallel sided at the head before the bow gently curves inwards and then partially out again. The sides then have a slight step, after which they are parallel sided to the break. This stepped tapering feature of the bow is reminiscent of T-shaped brooches. The head is decorated with an incised line along both…

Roman bow brooch missing the catch plate and pin. The brooch resembles the Trumpet type, but has a prominent recess between the head and the spring mechanism. The wings do not project beyond the narrow spring mechanism. The spring is secured by being looped around the underside of the mechanism. This brooch type is closest to the ‘Kraftig Profilierte (Strong profiled) brooches described by Hattatt (1985) as having a mainly European distribution and being found mostly on military sites from the 1st century AD. The head of the brooch is rounded and slightly expanded, resembling the Tr…

Incomplete cast copper alloy T-shape brooch, probably of late 1st century or early / middle second century AD. Little of the original surface survives on the bow. The foot is missing, but an area at the base of the fragment suggests some low vertical mouldings ran up the bow. The profile of the bow was likely to be D shaped. At the rear of the base of the bow there is a slot to house the catch plate. The wings survive in comparatively good condition and are plain, except for two incised lines near the end of each side. Head fragment of a bow brooch probably of T shaped type, and probably dating to the late 1st century or early / middle second century AD.
