Roman bow brooch missing the catch plate and pin. The brooch resembles the Trumpet type, but has a prominent recess between the head and the spring mechanism. The wings do not project beyond the narrow spring mechanism. The spring is secured by being looped around the underside of the mechanism. This brooch type is closest to the ‘Kraftig Profilierte (Strong profiled) brooches described by Hattatt (1985) as having a mainly European distribution and being found mostly on military sites from the 1st century AD. Incomplete bow brooch probably of dolphin or Polden Hill type dating to the 1st century AD. The bow is plain along the survivng portion with no decoration or moulding. The bow is reduced to a thin strip at the head, which presumably would have been the spring catch. The wings survive on both ends, but are incomplete. The more complete wing has the beginnings of a collar defined by an incised line. The spring only survives on one side.
