Earliest to Early Iron Age iron socketed axehead, probably of 8th to 5th century BC date The axehead is symmetrical in form and is incomplete, missing part of one face and side and is a small example (with a length of 88.6mm and a weight of 116.5g). The mouth appears to have been sub-rectangular (with a surviving external width and depth of 32mm and 27mm respectively and 3mm - 11mm thick). The socket (56mm deep) is also of rectangular or sub-rectangular form. There is a suggestion of a gentle out-turning at the mouth but no clear evidence for a collar. The sides are moderately strai…
