This is a small ingot of gold, approximately circular and large 'button-sized' in plan view, but with slight circumference irregularities. The ingot has a convex under-surface, with marked surface irregularities. This indicates the gold was poured into a small dished mould 7.0-7.5mm deep, possibly clay, sand or stone, and solidifying to take on the reverse contours of the rough and cracked surface. A complete uninscribed gold quarter stater of the Western region/Dobunni, dating to the late Iron Age (c. 60 BC-AD 10). The obverse is plain with no inscription, but the reverse fits within Rudd’s ‘Sunburst Little Horse’ type = ABC no.2051, p.105; VA 1010-1; S.375; BMC 2942-46/3134. Reverse: Stylised annulate triple-tailed horse right, pelletal cogwheel sun above, small animal (stylised foal?) below, dispersed ring-pellets in field. The object weighs 1.16g with a diameter of 13.8mm and thickness of 0.5mm. Similar objects are recorded on the PAS database e.g. WAW-5…
