A copper alloy strap slide of post medieval date (c. 1650-1800). The object is roughly circular in plan, with a slightly convex front face, c.2mm thick. Two flattened-oval sectioned lugs project from opposite ends of the reverse face, each is covered by iron corrosion product, presumably from iron rivets or inserts to the lugs. Incised curved lines radiating from a central circle decorate the front face of the object. There is some suggestion of finer decoration between the radiating lines, but the loss of the original surface to corrosion obscures any further definition. The object i…

The maximum width for a strap through the base would have been 19.2mm. No.1260 (pg 233-234, fig. 149) is a similar example in Egan and Pritchard (2002).

Cast copper alloy forked spacer from a composite strap-end with curved tapering arms and a semi-cylindrical knop. Length 37.5mm, maximum width 18mm, width of knop 12mm, weight 3.3 grams. Studies from London suggest that composite strap-ends with forked spacers are a type which was apparently not introduced prior to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 145). Following their introduction the type was used throughout the remainder of the Middle Ages and possibly later. A medieval date for this example is probable.

The closed end is composed of a waisted concave bar before a damaged edge, which probably led to a decorative terminal. The rectangular panel on the face contains moulded cast gothic lettering, consistent with a 14th century date. The letters are contained in two rectangular cells. The cell nearest the attachment edge contains the letters: W a The lower cell contains three letters, which are more difficult …

Cast copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date, probably dating to the Anglo-Saxon period and of 9th to 10th century date. The strap end is of slightly unusual form and does not easily fit into Thomas' classification. The strap end was attached to the strap by means of a sawn opening (7mm deep) and secured by a single protruding iron rivet, which is still present. The strap end tapers to its terminal with converging sides, which expand at the terminal. On either side, below the strap slot are rounded knops. The face is decorated with a moulded triangular panel before a raised deba…

Copper alloy composite three piece strap-end with a sheet spacer, from the Medieval Period and probably dating from the late 13th to the early 15th century. The strap-end is composed of two sheet metal plates separated by a sheet spacer occupying the whole width. The sides of the strap-end are near-parallel and the profile is slightly converging. The attachment edge has eroded, but was likely to have been straight or slightly concave, and the outside edge is curved with a pointed terminal knop. No decoration is discernible on either face, but tinning or silvering survives on both surfa…

Medieval copper alloy three piece strap-end with forked spacer, this form of strap-end is known to have been produced from the late 13th to the early 15th century (Egan 1991), but most occur in 14th century contexts. The strap-end is composed of two tongue shaped copper alloy sheet plates with a rounded outside edge, divided by a cast forked spacer with a terminal knop. The terminal has a collar and resembles an acorn. The strap-end was secured by two rivets positioned near the attachment edge. No decoration is evident on the surface of the plates.

Early Medieval (Late Anglo-Saxon) copper alloy strap-end of late 8th to 11th century date The strap-end is of Thomas' (2003, p 4)[1] Class B, Type 1 and is complete but is slightly distorted (with a length of 37.5mm and a weight of 3.4g). The strap-end is widest at the split attachment end (at 8.5mm wide and 4.3mm deep), which is near-straight and the two attachment rivets remain in place. The sides of the strap-end converge towards the terminal (to a minimum width of 5.5mm where it has a thickness of 1.6mm). The shaft is mostly undecorated but had three sets of parallel incised li…

Copper alloy zoomorphic strap-end possibly of Early Medieval, 11th century date The strap-end is complete (with a length of 27.5mm and a weight of 11.8g) but is heavily-corroded. The strap-end depicts a beast's head, cast in the round with narrowed snout, a central groove on the brow and conjoined C-shaped mouldings for ears (giving the strap-end a maximum width of 10.9mm, where it has a thickness of 8.9mm). There is the suggestion of an incised eye, on one side but is now corroded and all other detail has been lost. The underside is undecorated and gently concave. The attachment e…
