Roman copper alloy enamelled belt-plate of 2nd to early 3rd century date The belt fitting is fragmentary and is represented by the end of the plate only (with a surviving length of 23.2mm and a weight of 3.7g). The fitting has a projecting circular stud or 'frog' (10.1mm diameter, 2.1mm thick and with a height of 6.7mm above the plate). The outside of the frog was notched but is now eroded. The interior of the frog is enamelled with green enamel containing white squares and swirls, seemingly millefiori. The rod connecting the plate to the stud is of oval section. The buckle-plate was …

Decorative copper alloy fitting or mount of uncertain purpose, probably of Roman date. The fitting has two triangular cells filled with blue enamel either side of a plain and rectangular panel. The panel has a circular drilled hole which is positioned off-centre. On the rear of the piece are two T-shaped (one damaged) lugs, presumably to aid attachment. The rear of the hole is chamfered or countersunk and exhibits evidence of iron corrosion, implying an iron attachment rivet. Analysis of the enamel using a scanning electron microscope indicates the enamel is consistent with those used …

Copper alloy strap hooked fitting, possibly associated with a sword belt, probably of 16th or 17th century date. The mount has scrolled foliate decoration on its face. It would have had two suspension loops, one is now broken. The mount has an elaborate shape with trifoliate terminal and widens to the mid-point where it becomes waisted either side of the attachment loops. The mount is likely to have had three attachment holes, one at each terminal and one in the centre, one of the holes retains an iron pin. This would appear to be a cast belt mount of triangular form with two opposing lugs on the sides near the top, and a more substantial lozenge shaped projection on the base. The mount has a central triangular opening. The apex of the mount is slightly expanded into a relatively long thin lozenge motif. The surface decoration has eroded but seems to have been a hatched design in low relief contained within a border. There are organic remnants surviving on the reverse of the mount consisting of a coarse wool weave over a leather backing. The wool is observable through the central opening…

Cast copper alloy strap union formed by a raised reverse S-scroll, the back of which is flat, enclosing two circular bosses 11mm in diameter and with two vertical strap bars, of circular section, attached by oval shaped lugs. The entire surface of the strap-union is quite corroded and pitted. Although the figure-of-eight form flanked by two vertical bars fits into Taylor and Brailsford?s Type 1 strap union category, the use of the S-scroll motif is only paralleled on the larger and more elaborate examples from Seven Sisters and Chepstow. These are classified as Type 2 and date to the…

The central rectangular panel has a pointed mid-rib formed by two adjacent concave sections. Traces of gilding survive over much of the rectangular panel. There is a central integral attachment rivet on the rear of the mount. There are also two small further pin stubs at the terminals, but it is unclear if these were employed as an attachment device.
