The outside edge is expanded but thinner than the sides (3.7mm wide and 1.8mm thick) and does not have a groove to accommodate the pin but there is a possible area of wear from the pin. The sides are narrow (0.8mm wide) and very slightly convex and convergent to the bar. The surface is corroded with a dark grey-green patina. The slight thinning …

Late Medieval copper alloy buckle of 15th century date The buckle is incomplete, missing the majority of the frame and the back-plate (with a length of 55.5mm and a weight of 10.4g). The frame was likely to have been of oval form (with a surviving length of 10.0mm and a surviving width of 30.2mm) and is of sub-rectangular section (3.7mm wide and 3.2mm thick) decorated, at least on the sides with transverse grooves. The circular-sectioned copper alloy pin survives (with a length of 33.5mm and a diameter of 2.5mm), secured in an oval aperture behind the frame, where the buckle narr…

Medieval copper alloy buckle frame of mid-12th to 14th century date The buckle frame is oval with ornate outside edge and is missing the pin (with a length of 18.5mm and a weight of 3.2g). The outside edge is expanded and of sub-triangular section (18.5mm long, 5.8mm wide and 4.7mm thick) and decorated on the front and rear with fine ribs and grooves. A pair of ribs near the centre flank a central groove which would have been a notch for the pin. The sides are convex (giving the buckle a width of 18.8mm) and of sub-rectangular section (3.3mm thick and 1.8mm wide). The sub-square-…

Medieval copper alloy buckle of annular type and of mid-13th to mid-15th century date The buckle frame is circular (29.6mm external diameter, 21.7mm internal diameter and weighing 6.7g) and is also of circular section (3.8mm diameter). There are discernible wear facets on the inside of the frame, probably the result of wear from a strap. There is no pin restriction on the frame. The pin is incomplete, missing the rear of the loop and the tip (with a length of 28.7mm) but is likely to have had an open loop around the frame (with a width of 2.9mm). There is a single ribbed moulding…

A complete copper alloy Medieval buckle (c. AD 1350-1450). The object consists of the buckle frame, folded plate and cast pin. The frame is cast and rectangular in plan, measuring 14.5mm length, 16.6mm width and 2.6mm thick, with a narrowed bar and an expanded moulded outer edge with small side flanges. The outer edge is worn, but appears to be incised with three grooves, the central likely serving as the pin rest, although the pin has been warped to one side through dirt/corrosion. The outer edge slopes downwards to a triangle-shaped profile. The reverse is undecorated and flat. The …

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval buckle dating to c. AD 1350-1400. The object consists of a sub-rectangular buckle frame and plate. The frame (25mm length, 16mm width) is a single loop type with a recessed bar and extended outer edge which is rounded at the end. The outer edge is semi-triangular in cross section and decorated with a chevron dividing the surface into two panels of incised grooves; the first with six crudely equidistant straight grooves, and the second with four larger and slightly diagonal grooves flanking a raised central lip. A fragment of a copper alloy Medieval buckle frame probably dating to c. AD 1350-1400. The object was likely originally a single loop D-shaped buckle frame with a curved, widened outer edge. The break on the wider outer edge is likely at the central pin rest. The fragment is roughly D-shaped in cross section with a slightly convex reverse surface and a wider, flat obverse. The obverse surface of the fragment is decorated with incised lines in geometric patterns including two triangles facing in opposite directions on the outer edge (inward facing) and curve (outward facing). Fragment of copper alloy square or rectangular buckle frame. A shallow channel flanked by parallel lines shows where the pin would have sat. The bar and most of the frame is missing, making it hard to date, but appears similar to some of the rectangular and square framed buckles with plates in Egan and Pritchard (2002), which would date it to the Medieval period after 1350 AD. The object is 8.4mm in length, 11.7mm in width, 3mm thick and weighs 1.12g.

Copper alloy buckle of medieval to early post medieval date The buckle has a circular frame and integral, solid plate, missing the pin and now heavily-corroded (with a length of 35.1mm and a weight of 2.6g). The circular frame (20.2mm diameter) was of sub-rectangular section (1.5mm wide and 2.2mm thick). There was a perforation behind the frame to accommodate the missing pin, which appears to be filled with ferrous corrosion, suggesting an iron pin. The solid integral plate is eroded but was likely to have been rectangular (7.6mm wide and 2.3mm thick) There is the suggestion of a…
