Cast circular buckle frame, with central bar set back from the frame. The frame has a 'D' shaped cross-section and is decorated on its upper surface with a single incised line forming a chevron motif. The central bar is thin (c. 1.5mm diameter) and is slightly bent. There is an area of iron corrosion near one of the ends of the bar, suggesting the now absent pin was of iron.

Buckle frame fragment of Anglo-Saxon date, probably dating from the 5th to 8th century. The frame is broken at both ends and has a moulded animal head projection erupting from above the thinning of the frame at the junction with the bar. The buckle was probably D-shaped, and is originally likely to have had a buckle plate. The frame beyond the animal head is plain and of oval section. The animal head is asymmetrical about its width with incised eyes crowned on one side with transverse markings. The snout is dished on both sides and is angled upwards, possibly suggesting an open mouth b…

Copper alloy rectangular framed buckle with central bar, of Post Medieval date, probably 17th century. The buckle is concave along its length; the outside edge of the frame at both ends is sub-triangular. The side of the frame are angled inwards slightly and have a rounded knop at the position of the central bar. The buckle has retained the pin, which is of D-shaped section and has a transverse ridge. The frame was originally tinned, but is otherwise plain.

Medieval copper alloy buckle of annular type and of mid 13th to mid 15th century date The buckle frame is near-circular (24.5mm - 45.4mm external diameter, 34.2mm - 35.2mm internal diameter and weighing 16.9g) and is of faceted, sub-oval section (4.1mm - 5.3mm wide and 4.3mm - 5.2mm thick). Faceting on the frame may be the result of wear from a strap. There is no pin restriction on the frame. The pin is incomplete (with a surviving length of 30.5mm) and has an open loop around the frame, now truncated and is narrowest at the rear of the loop, gradually widening towards the shaft (w…

Late Medieval copper alloy buckle of 15th century date The buckle is incomplete, missing the majority of the frame and the back-plate (with a length of 55.5mm and a weight of 10.4g). The frame was likely to have been of oval form (with a surviving length of 10.0mm and a surviving width of 30.2mm) and is of sub-rectangular section (3.7mm wide and 3.2mm thick) decorated, at least on the sides with transverse grooves. The circular-sectioned copper alloy pin survives (with a length of 33.5mm and a diameter of 2.5mm), secured in an oval aperture behind the frame, where the buckle narr…

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval buckle dating to c. AD 1350-1400. The object consists of a sub-rectangular buckle frame and plate. The frame (25mm length, 16mm width) is a single loop type with a recessed bar and extended outer edge which is rounded at the end. The outer edge is semi-triangular in cross section and decorated with a chevron dividing the surface into two panels of incised grooves; the first with six crudely equidistant straight grooves, and the second with four larger and slightly diagonal grooves flanking a raised central lip. The folded plate (26.6mm length, …

A fragment of a copper alloy Medieval buckle frame probably dating to c. AD 1350-1400. The object was likely originally a single loop D-shaped buckle frame with a curved, widened outer edge. The break on the wider outer edge is likely at the central pin rest. The fragment is roughly D-shaped in cross section with a slightly convex reverse surface and a wider, flat obverse. The obverse surface of the fragment is decorated with incised lines in geometric patterns including two triangles facing in opposite directions on the outer edge (inward facing) and curve (outward facing). Diagonal …

Medieval copper alloy buckle frame The cast buckle is of oval form, with elaborate outside edge and is missing the pin and any associated plate and now has a distorted bar (with a length of 18.0mm, a width of 22.5mm and a weight of 2.0g). The outside edge is expanded (5.0mm wide and 3.1mm thick) and narrows at the position of the missing pin. The top face is decorated with cross hatched incised lines and the decoration appears to extend onto the sides of the frame. The sides are oval sectioned (1.4mm x 1.0mm). The bar is narrowed and now extends into the buckle frame, probably be…

Post medieval copper alloy buckle of 16th to mid 17th century date The buckle is complete and is of oval, double-looped type, with an integral suspension loop at the base (with an overall length of 53.7mm, a width of 39.1mm and a weight of 13.0g). The oval frame (43.1mm long) is concave across its width (giving a depth of 5.8mm) and the sides are bevelled on the rear (with a thickness of 1.6mm - 2.7mm). The unlooped end of the bar has a ribbed moulding on the frame but otherwise there is no decoration. The integral loop (of 12mm diameter) is perpendicular to the axis of the buckle …

A complete copper alloy asymmetrical double looped buckle of Post-Medieval date, likely late 16th or 17th century. The buckle is of a double looped angled form, with an oval outside edge loop with decorative knop and an uneven rectangular/slightly trapezoidal inside edge loop. The sides are also asymmetrical, one being straight with an angular notch where the bar meets the frame, the other having a shallow notch and more curved sides. The buckle is angled about the bar, so that the front face of the buckle is slightly convex. The buckle is decorated with transverse mouldings on the fr…

Post medieval copper alloy buckle, probably of 17th century date The cast buckle is of unusual three-dimensional and asymmetric form (with a length of 32.5mm, a height of 17mm and a weight of 4.9g). The outside of the frame is curved and bevelled (with a thickness of 1.69mm) with a notch to accommodate the missing pin. The sides are near-straight and parallel (with a width of 15.8mm). Towards the rear is the bar with adhering iron corrosion, suggesting that the missing pin was iron. The attachment end of the frame deepens and at the apex is an angled tab, which depicts a bird in fl…
