Medieval copper alloy strap-slide, for holding down the free end of a strap. Probably of late 13th or 14th century date The strap-slide is a trapezoidal frame with external rivet (with a length of 16.2mm and a weight of 1.6g). The trapezoid (with a width at the apex of 16.1mm, at the base of 13.9mm and with internal dimensions of 13.5mm x 8.9mm) has an expanded top edge (with a width of 4.6mm), while the rest of the frame has a consistent rectangular section (2.8mm wide and 1.5mm thick). The attachment rivet is circular-sectioned (1.9mm diameter and 3.9mm long) and appears to be in…

Medieval copper alloy strap loop with separate rivet of 14th or 15th century date The cast strap loop is of D-shaped form with a prominent knop on the outside edge of the frame (with an overall length of 23.8mm and a weight of 3.3g). The terminal knop is oval sectioned (5.3mm long, 4.2mm wide and 5.0mm high) and has a ribbed border before the frame. The frame and bar are sub-rectangular sectioned (4.3mm wide and 1.9mm thick) and the sides of the frame are near-parallel, slightly convex. The bar has a circular perforation (2mm diameter) near the centre. The surface has a pale grey…

A fragment of copper alloy sheet plate mount or fitting with gilding remnants and a rivet, likely of medieval date, potentially from a buckle. The plate is made of 0.8mm thick copper alloy sheet and was likely rectangular in shape, with two surviving parallel edges, the other two edges ending in uneven transverse breaks. A c. 3mm diameter, 3.65mm deep rivet is fixed equidistantly from the two surviving edges. The fixing of this rivet bent the plate inwards around the rivet. The front of the plate is decorated by double rows of punched decoration along both edges, and was once covered b…

Decorated copper alloy strap end of Medieval date, probably 14th or 15th century date. A double sheet strap end, attached by means of a rivet at either end. The mount is rectangular with a pointed terminal and is decorated with a double punched border, the interior line of punch marks incorporates the rivet at the terminal. The inner sheet is plain except for a small semicircular hole of uncertain function against one of the sides. The inner plate is slightly narrower than the outer plate.

Medieval copper alloy strap-end of 13th to 15th century date The strap-end is of riveted, double sheet-metal type, without a spacer and is fragmentary, missing the attachment end and the break appears to have occurred relatively recently (with a surviving length of 21.4mm, a thickness of 1.7mm and a weight of 1.5g). At the break (with a width of 9.2mm), the sheet plate (with a thickness of 0.5mm) has distorted. The sides of the surviving part are straight and slightly convergent towards the terminal. The terminal is of trefoil form (with a length of 7.8mm). The two plates are sec…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete sheet copper alloy strap end of Medieval date (c. AD 1350-1500). The single sheet is plain, undecorated, rectangular in plan and broken at the fold with surviving dimensions of length of 29.7mm, 9.9mm wide and 0.6mm thick. A single central rivet perforates the end of the plate, the rivet still in situ with a distorted depth of 2.7mm. The object appears to have been bent in two places along its length, probably due to later activity, and surface corrosion has affected these areas. The strap end is smooth with a medium green patina and weighs 1.34g.

A complete copper alloy folded sheet strap end dating to the Medieval Period (c. 1270-1450 AD). The strap end is simple, being sheet of copper alloy folded widthways, and has a single rivet on one end fixed in the centre of the inside edge. Corrosion has led to the removal of some of the original surface, which is now patinated with a green- brown colour. It measures 13.12mm in length and 10.05mm in width; and 0.86g in weight.

A fragmentary copper alloy strap end dating to the Medieval period. The remaining part is a sheet, which has suffered a great deal of wear and is bent in two separate areas. It has a single rivet hole at the centre of the inside edge of the sheet. Any decoration on this object is now obscured by the loss of the surface to abrasion and corrosion. The precise type of strap this sheet formed part of is uncertain, as it is missing diagnostic features necessary to identify the specific form, which would have helped date it more closely. The strap end measures 20.41mm in length, 11.34mm in …

An incomplete copper alloy spur, dating to the Post Medieval period, likely to the 17th century. The spur is nearly complete, with the sides, terminals, and heel intact, with a moulded upturned neck ending in a break. There is no sign of a rowel box, but spurs of this period were exclusively rowel spurs, so this can be assumed to have been so. The spur is relatively small, although heavy distortion may have narrowed the width between the terminals. The terminals are of figure of eight form with moulded collars. The frame has a plano-convex section, with a flat inner and con…

Copper alloy spoon fragment, possibly of Roman date The spoon is fragmentary, represented by the incomplete bowl and beginning of the handle (with a surviving length of 29.9mm and a weight of 1.6g). The handle is attached to the underside of the bowl edge with a V-shaped join and is of sub-rectangular section (2.2mm wide, 2.9mm thick and with a surviving length of 6.5mm). The stub of the loop is evident at the apex of the rear and elsewhere the rear in not decorated but is concave across its width. The edges are bevelled towards the seal face. Fragment of a copper alloy frame of Medieval date. This fragment is likely to be from decorative binding attached to some form of leather container, possibly a purse, box or satchel. The fragment is a rounded 'V' shape in profile, which becomes narrower from one end to the other. One exterior surface (the thicker surface) is decorated with a double inscribed chevron design. The thinner interior surface contains a perforation, presumably in order to stitch the frame to the leather container. There may have been a further larger perforation where the fragment has broken.
