Copper alloy pan-weight of uncertain date The weight is circular and is rectangular sectioned (with a diameter of 15.5mm and a thickness of 3.3mm). The face is decorated a concentric ring and inner depression, possibly turned. The reverse is flat and has three punched indentations, possibly in a triangular arrangement. The surface has a mid-green patina with file marks evident on the underside. The weight now weighs 2.92g, equivalent to 0.103 ounce and it is possible that the weight was a one-eighth ounce weight under the Mercantile, Avoirdupois or Tower systems (equivalent to 3…

Lead weight of uncertain date, probably medieval to post medieval The lead weight is of suspension type with an integral loop at the apex and is complete (with a length of 40.1mm). The loop is rectangular-sectioned (4.4mm thick and 13.3mm long) with a central, circular perforation (5.8mm diameter) and is now slightly distorted. The body of the weight is sub-circular with straight sides, diverging towards the base (with a minimum diameter of 11.7mm and a maximum of 19.8mm). The base is flat and has four perforations, which appear to emerge on the sides, above the base. These may h…

Two fragments of Pewter or copper alloy- one possible vessel rim. Little diagnostic but maybe a medieval or post medieval vessel. A fragment 46.4mm long, 19.8mmwide and a maximum of 1.5mm thick, weighs 5.07g. The fragment has a channel beaten in lengthways with flanking ridges. One long edge is thinner that the other- 0.9mm vs 1.3mm. Possible vessel rim, but every edge is a break, and no other diagnostic features. Form of the sheet gives little indication as to shape due to distortion. A fragment 33mm long, 19.1mm wide, maximum 2.7mm thick, weighs 6.42g. Every edge is a b…

Crude copper alloy sub-conical casting with a flat basal end and sub-circular section. Dimensions 26mm x 20mm x 18mm, weight 23.4 grams. Identification is difficult; superficially the casting resembles the lower part of a vessel foot but it may also be an oddly shaped casting jet. Date uncertain.

Copper alloy decorative terminal, possibly from a pin of Roman date The object is fragmentary, represented by the damaged terminal; a shaft fragment (with a surviving length of 33.4mm and a weight of 3.4g). The top of the terminal was conical (with a basal diameter of 7.0mm) and is heavily corroded, with a differential corrosion, beneath which the terminal is of faceted-globular form before a moulding above the top of the shaft. The shaft is circular sectioned and gradually widens (from a diameter of 2.8mm to 5.0mm) before narrowing slightly towards the break. The surface has a d…

Copper alloy anthropomorphic terminal of uncertain date The terminal is in the form of a human head and has broken across the neck (with a surviving length of 18.6mm, a maximum width of 8.6mm, a maximum thickness of 10.4mm and a weight of 7.5g). The terminal is heavily-corroded and the corrosion has removed much of the detail, there are depressions depicting the eyes and a central ridge is evident indicating the position of the nose. Another depression surviving on one side only is likely to depict a ear. The surviving form and style would indicate a comparatively naturalistic de…

A fragmentary copper alloy object of unknown function, purpose, and date, although a Roman origin is suspected. The object is made from a single piece of copper alloy, sub rectangular in plan with convex sides and squared off ends, one tapering. In profile the object has curving, flattened S-shaped profile and is much thicker (c. 6mm) at one end than the other (c.2.3mm). One face bears crude incised linear decorations that broadly match the plan of the object with two transverse lines at the widest point of the face. The surface has mostly corroded, with areas of rust coloured and gre…
