Early Bronze Age flint ‘Thumbnail’ scraper The scraper is complete (with a length of 23.1mm, a width of 22.8mm, a thickness of 9.2mm and a weight of 5.2g). The dorsal face has extensive invasive retouch and only the proximal edge area is not retouched. The retouch is characteristically steep, more pronounced at the distal end. There is a small patch of surviving cortex along the proximal edge. The flint is largely unpatinated. Thumbnail scrapers are often associated with Beaker material culture.

Cast copper alloy sword or dagger chape, probably of late Medieval or Early Post-Medieval date. The chape has one straight side and one curved to follow the shape of the blade. The top of the chape is serrated and has corresponding decorative holes bounded by a horizontal rib. The bottom of the chape has a small knop. The rear has a wide seam to enable soldering to the back plate. The surface is covered with coarse file marks running horizontally, and has a black colour or patina, which may have been deliberately applied.

Post medieval copper alloy saddle pommel of 16th or 17th century date The pommel is near-complete and retains one of the buckle-frames, but is missing one of the attachment lugs (with a length of 67.9 mm and a weight of 100.7g). The pommel is of two-piece construction and remain joined, soldered across its midsection. The domed pommel is hollow and of sub-circular section (with a diameter of 37.1mm, an internal diameter of 31.8mm and is up to 2.8mm thick). The sides are gently convex and near-parallel before its rounded apex. The surviving lug is slightly distorted (giving a widt…

Post medieval copper alloy saddle pommel of 16th or 17th century date The pommel is near-complete, with damaged attachment lugs (with a length of 69.7mm and a weight of 41.9g) and is of two-piece construction, now separated but would have been soldered across its midsection. The domed pommel is hollow and of oval section (with a diameter of 33.1mm x 31.0mm, an internal diameter of 29.5mm x 27.5mm and is 1-2mm thick). The sides are straight and near-parallel to the undulating base. There was a double attachment hole for rivets near the base and there would have been a lug on each si…

Medieval to Post medieval copper alloy rowel from a spur, probably of 15th to 18th century date The rowel is near-complete, with some peripheral damage to some of the points (with a maximum surviving diameter of 35.3mm, a thickness of 2.7mm and a weight of 7.0g). The rowel comprises seven points, which gradually taper to the tips. Each of the points was separated from the next by a groove as far as the central perforation and is evident on both faces. The perforation is oval (5.6mm x 4.5mm) and is placed off-centre. The rowel is slightly thicker at the centre. The surface has a dar…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Relatively large cast rotary key, probably dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The bit is trapezoidal in shape and is comparatively simple for this key type, with a single cleft each side and two chevron shaped grooves each side. The shaft is hollow, with an off-centre hole, and is circular except for slight faceting. The key has an elaborately collar with two triangular profiled mouldings contained with rectangular mouldings. The bow is circular, and is flat internally with a biconical exterior. There is a square knob on the outside edge of the bow with a cross at its apex.

Medieval or post medieval copper alloy rotary key probably from 13th to 17th century date The key is incomplete, missing the bow (with a surviving length of 72.5mm and a weight of 24.7g). The bow is incomplete but is likely to have been of circular to oval form (with a surviving width of 9.6mm) and appears to have been of triangular section. There is a V-shaped moulding at the base of the bow. The shank is of faceted oval section, becoming D-shaped at the tip (7.6mm x 8.7mm below the bow and 4.1mm x 5.0mm at the tip). Curator's Report Description of object Rein-ring or harness ring (Found in association with Terret (NMGW-9B2D52) This is a substantial cast bronze ring with a circular cross-section. At one point, there is a slight casting imperfection, visible as a slight pitted thinning with a slightly bulbous or raised margin. This would not have compromised the structural strength of the piece. Slight thinning and smoothing of the internal surface on one side of the ring may represent a slight wear facet, created through pressure from straps or a bit-link. On one upper surface, there is a…

Annular ring of copper alloy. This is likely to be a simple annular round (or near round) section buckle frame of Medieval date, probably 13th –15th century. The ring is plain, except for an expanded area with a pair of low lugs and the pin constricting mouldings. The relatively narrow gap or groove between these mouldings would suggest the rings use as a buckle rather than a brooch. The groove seemingly being too slender to seat the stem of a brooch pin. Egan (1991) states that a constriction on a single frame is generally an indication of a brooch rather than a buckle, leaving…

A cast copper alloy object, probably a ring handle of indeterminate age. The ring is solid cast, oval in plan (68.9mm x 62.0mm) and teardrop-shaped in section with a rounder interna edge and a more pronounced external edge (ring width c.7.7mm wide x 4.2mm thick). The ring lacks any diagnostic features to estimate precise function or relative date. The metal has a brownish-green smooth patina with large areas of rough mid- to light-green corrosion and weighs 28.39g.

The ring is roughly D-shaped/sub-triangular in section with a shallow central ridge along the outer surface and small angular wear facets visible at the breaks. There is no visible evidence for surface decoration. It is difficult to determine function with so little remaining, but it may be a fragment of a harness ring. Late Medieval lead alloy purse bar, c. 15th or 16th century The purse bar is complete with a length of 53.6mm and a weight of 7.1g. The terminals were pointed with a flange before a recess to secure the missing frame. The bars are of sub-rectangular section with attachment plates beneath. The bar widens (to 10.1mm) and thins (to 3.6mm) at the centre to accommodate a perforation (3.0mm diameter), through which the loop would have passed. No decoration is evident on the purse bar. The surface is poorly preserved and has a mid-grey colour.

Incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar. The perforated shield-shaped central block is decorated with a lattice pattern on one side and a rudimentary scallop-shell pattern on the other. The side bars are circular in section and gripped by stylised animals' heads at their junction with the central block. Microscopic observation suggests that the decorative motifs on both the central block and the side bars are inlaid with niello.
