Cast copper alloy single loop D-shaped buckle with a frame embellished with an ornate outer edge, and a narrowed and offset strap bar. The outer edge of the frame has a notched lip flanked on either side by a pair of transverse knops. Egan and Pritchard have published a close parallel, recovered from excavations in London, which dates to c.AD1350 to c. AD 1400 (1991, 73, no.297). A broadly comparable date for the St Nicholas buckle is not unreasonable.

Cast copper alloy single loop buckle with a plain circular frame, probably dating from 14th to the early 15th century (Ottaway & Rogers 2002, 2886). There has been confusion in categorising annular brooches and annular buckles, Egan’s (in Egan & Pritchard 1991, 64-5) definition of brooch frames having a constriction or a hole for the pin, would result in this example being categorised as a buckle. The frame is slightly oval, possibly as a result of distortion and is circular in cross-section. The pin is still attached and has an open loop around the frame. The pin is ‘D’ shaped …
