Workflow stage: Published Find published
Late Bronze Age bronze end-winged axe, belonging to the Carp's Tongue complex of Ewart Park metalworking, corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 7 and dated to c. 950-750BC. The winged axe is incomplete, missing both wings on the unlooped side (the axe has an overall length of 1360.9mm and a weight of 282.8g). The butt protrudes beyond the return of the wings (by 14mm) and expands to the end (with a width of 22.4mm and a thickness of 6.1mm). The end of the butt has two 'horns' each side of a central rectangular break, which would have been attached to the casting jet before remov…

Freestanding discoidal crudely cast lead, or lead alloy weight decorated with a cross motif. Diameter 23-25mm, thickness 6.5mm, weight 23 grams. Lead weights such as these could have performed a variety of functions such as unofficial weights and measures used by traders and merchants. Dating them is difficult, excavated examples range in date from the medieval period to the nineteenth century.

Decorated lead weight of medieval to post medieval date The weight is of circular form (17.3mm diameter and 6.7mm deep) and weighs 12.8g (equivalent to 0.4515 ounce). The sides converge slightly to the base and is rounded. The top face has punched decoration, comprising a circular border. The interior is decorated with a shield device with a punched wavy outline. Post medieval copper alloy trade weight of mid-17th to early 18th century date The weight is stamped with a crowned W, probably for William III, a sword and ewer for London. The weight now weighs 12.0g, equivalent to 0.4232 ounces and would originally have been a half-ounce weight. There is comparatively large void within the weight from a casting flaw. The surface has a mid to dark green patina.

Fragment of a large iron vessel (cauldron?) consisting of a separately forged leg, plano-convex in section and with a decorative outer longitudinal ridge, and part of the vessel's base. Dimensions of surviving portion of the vessel's base 96mm x 72mm, vessel thickness 6mm, length of leg 45mm, weight 276.4 grams. Although cast iron vessels of this form were used until the early twentieth century the longitudinal ridge on the leg is similar to those decorating late medieval and post-medieval copper alloy vessel legs suggesting it may be of earlier date.

Crudely cast, slightly waisted, copper alloy vessel leg. Length 41mm, width 28-33mm, thickness 18mm, weight 77.4 grams. Identifying the vessel type that this leg is from is not possible. Presumably it was either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is equally difficult as the form of the legs like this did not change from the medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95).

Complete cast copper alloy vessel leg. Part of the apparently integrally cast body of the vessel remains attached to the leg. Length 78mm, width 16-17 mm, weight 115.2 grams. Medieval to post-medieval. The surface of the leg is preferentially blackened in comparison to the inside of the vessel body; this "sooting" is a common phenomena and is due to oxidisation of the outer surface of the vessel through exposure to the cooking fire.

The midrib ends before the break, where the object is slightly thicker (at 1.9mm) possibly because of cutting with a pliers or similar tool. The surface has been strip…
