Cast copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout shaped in the form of a dog’s head with a short barrel protruding from the animal’s mouth, probably of 15th or 16th century date. The dog is modelled with apparently closed eyes, small but upright ears and a slight crest on the back of its head. The spout illustrates no evidence of an attachment device, suggesting it was welded or soldered to the vessel. The spout is paralleled by examples from the moat at Cardiff Castle (Lewis 1991, 4, fig 8A)and an unprovenanced example (Bailey 1997, 57-58 no 5).

Copper alloy cast cauldron or skillet leg fragment, broken at both ends, and probably of late Medieval or Post Medieval date. The leg is of low D-shaped section with a rounded rib on the outside face. The sides converge towards the foot and the leg thickens near the top break. Black deposits over the surface indicate heavy sooting and burning.

Medieval copper alloy ewer spout of 14th or 15th century date The cast spout is fragmentary, represented by the zoomorphic end of the spout in the form of the head of a water bird, probably a duck (with a length of 41.8mm and a height of 24.2mm and a weight of 22.0g, including sediment). The neck has broken below the head and is sub-circular sectioned (with an external diameter of 11.1mm – 11.9mm and internal diameter of 7.0mm). The fragmentary spout is widens and deepest at the head (with a width of 14.2mm and a depth of 16.8mm). The bird is depicted with short incised marks c…

Copper alloy vessel handle, possibly from a jug of Roman date The handle is complete (with a length of 68.3mm, a depth of 19mm and a weight of 35.7g) but no part of the container vessel survives. The handle is of S-shaped form and has flattened attachment points on each end. The upper, oval attachment point (14.5mm long x 9.4m m wide) has an outward angle, whereas the lower, sub-triangular attachment point (12.5mm long x 12.5m m wide) is near-vertical. The handle is of oval section, widening to its furthest point (where it has a width and thickness of 12.5mm and 9.9mm respective…

Copper alloy vessel rim and handle fragment of uncertain date, possibly medieval The cast vessel is fragmentary, represented by a rim fragment (40.5mm long) and the upper part of the handle (40.5mm deep and weighing 49.2g), soldered together. The vessel rim has little curvature across its width, suggesting a vessel of sizeable diameter. The outside of the vessel is straight along its length (23.1mm surviving length) and has no decoration. The interior of the rim is rounded (with a vessel thickness of 4.7mm). The vessel handle is positioned level with the top of the rim and is per…

A leg fragment from a large cast copper alloy vessel, probably a cauldron, posnet or skillet likely of 16th century date, but potentially of late Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. 1300-1700 AD).  The fragment is incomplete, with the end of the leg missing and the upper portion ending in a break where it joined the body of the vessel. The leg has a surviving length of 93.6mm, width of 60.3mm, and thickness of 28mm, and weighs 293.6g. The surviving portion of leg has a sub-rectangular section excepting the robust 12.3mm wide midrib running down the centre of the flat front face. …

The head is flat and sub-oval (14.3mm x 15.3mm, 2.5mm thick) with a sub-oval perforation (7mm x 5.8mm). The shaft is 7.0mm wide and 2.5mm thick at the bottom of the head and gradually extends to the break where it reaches a width of 11.9mm and 3.7mm thick. The shaft is bent 15.7mm down from the head giving the object an overall distorted length of 62.5mm. Some filing marks are visible on the reverse. The object is a medium green patina with patches of bright green bron…

A fragmentary cast copper alloy fragment, possibly of Late Medieval date (c.15th-16th century AD). The fragment is a piece of a rim from a large cauldron measuring 11.6mm long x 7.9mm wide x 27.4mm-25.4mm thick. The rim has a very slightly expanded lip on the inside surface before tapering slightly to the edge and the outer surface is flat with no traces of decoration surviving. Two rivets hold a sheet of copper alloy in place (surviving length 27.1mm, max surviving width 15.6mm) likely repairing a crack on the inside surface of the cauldron. These types of rivets are common in Medieva…
