An incomplete distorted copper alloy needle of uncertain date, likely Medieval to Post Medieval. The needle is missing the upper half of its head, which is broken across the eye. The needle shank has an oval section tapering to flattened oval towards the head, which has a flat section 1.5mm thick. Probably part of a cast copper alloy strap-type box mount. The mount is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with a central perforation and what appears to be a tapering terminal or knop but is where the mount has been broken. It is gilded on its upper surface and decorated with four probably white glass, rather than pearl, beads inset into the four corners of the main plate. Microscopic examination suggests that the underside of the mount was not gilded. Length 34mm, width 11mm, thickness 3.5mm, weight 3.9grams. The mount has an openwork design depicting a standing figure beside a quadruped animal, possibly a lion and a bird perched on the back of the beast. Recorded at the Hidden Treasure Finds Day at National Museums & Galleries of Wales. Copper alloy armorial mount of Medieval date, probably dating from the 12th – 14th century.
