Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, probably of late 13th or 14th century date The harness pendant is near-complete, missing only the top of the loop, but has very poor surface preservation. The pendant has a surviving length of 39.06mm and has a weight of 4.8g. The loop has a surviving depth of 5.53mm. The pendant is shield-shaped with small traces of enamel surviving. There is the suggestion of a diagonal strip across the shield (bend), within the strip a small amount of red enamel (Gules) survives. Outside the strip (sinister chief and dexter base) are traces of blue enamel (Azu…

Enamelled, shield-shaped horse harness pendant. Type I (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). The pendant is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with an integral suspension loop, which is now slightly twisted. It is decorated with a heraldic device of a lion rampant possibly with a double tail on a background of blue enamel. Although ancient enamels can change their colour as a consequence of burial, microscopic study shows that blue was the enamels original colour. Microscopic examination also indicated that the unenamelled surfaces of the pendant were probably gilded. Traces of this p…

Copper alloy, shield-shaped harness pendant with an integrally cast suspension loop and decorated with a bird of prey facing left motif which has been recessed, presumably to take enamel. No trace of the applied enamel apparently survives. The pendant is probably of fourteenth or fifteenth century date. Unfortunately, without knowing the original colours of the applied enamel, it is not possible to identify the heraldic device depicted on the pendant. Identified from a scanned image.

Enamelled, shield-shaped horse harness pendant. Type I (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). The pendant is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with an integral suspension loop, which is now slightly bent. It is decorated with a heraldic device made up of three chevrons. Although ancient enamels can change their colour as a consequence of burial, microscopic study suggests that the recessed chevrons may have originally been decorated with red enamel. The pendant is corroded and its sinister side is damaged. Height 43mm, width 27mm, thickness 2mm.

Fragment of a copper alloy horse harness pendant with an integral suspension loop and curved, sloping shoulders. Only a corroded fragment of the pendant survives and it is not possible to identify its original form with certainty; however, the extant sloping shoulders suggest that it may be an example of a Type V, quatrefoil pendant (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). No evidence of decoration survives; however, the pendant is perforated by a sub-rectangular fixing hole c.11mm below the suspension loop suggesting that it may have been embellished with an appliqué mount or stud. Shield-shaped harness pendant, complete, but the surface has been lost, making it impossible to discern any of the original design. The upper edge is convex, rather than flat, giving the pendant a rounded appearance, differing from the traditional shield-shape. The perforation is filled with iron corrosion suggesting the pendant was secured to the suspension mount by an iron pin. The reverse of the piece has a black patina with traces of silver surviving in patches, suggesting the pendant may have …

Medieval copper alloy harness pendant of 13th or 14th century date The harness pendant is incomplete, missing the suspension loop and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 29.0mm, a thickness of 1.8mm 0 2.5mm and a weight of 3.6g) and was probably of lozenge form. The suspension loop is perpendicular to the mount (with a surviving depth of 4.5mm and a thickness of 1mm – 3mm) and has broken through the perforation. The sides of the pendant are eroded but appear to have a linear diversion (giving a maximum surviving width of 20.7mm) before converging towards the missing…
