Shield-shaped harness pendant, complete, but the surface has been lost, making it impossible to discern any of the original design. The upper edge is convex, rather than flat, giving the pendant a rounded appearance, differing from the traditional shield-shape. The attachment loop is present and has its axis at right angles to that of the pendant. The perforation is filled with iron corrosion suggesting the pendant was secured to the suspension mount by an iron pin. The reverse of the piece has a black patina with traces of silver surviving in patches, suggesting the pendant may have …

Gilded copper alloy hinged fitting of uncertain date and function, but possibly Medieval. The fitting is composed of two pieces, an attachment plate and a small tongue, which may be eroded and broken. The attachment plate is rectangular with two rivet holes, one of which retains its copper alloy rivet. The plate is hinged to a sub-rectangular plate by an iron pin. The plate is without attachment holes or lugs with the remnants of relief decoration near the top. Both pieces have traces of gilding on the surfaces. It is possible that find represents a small fragment of a Medieval harnes…

Medieval copper alloy harness pendant of 13th or 14th century date
The harness pendant is incomplete, missing the suspension loop and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 29.0mm, a thickness of 1.8mm 0 2.5mm and a weight of 3.6g) and was probably of lozenge form. The suspension loop is perpendicular to the mount (with a surviving depth of 4.5mm and a thickness of 1mm – 3mm) and has broken through the perforation. The sides of the pendant are eroded but appear to have a linear diversion (giving a maximum surviving width of 20.7mm) before converging towards the missing…

Medieval copper alloy harness pendant probably of 13th or 14th century date
The cast harness pendant has a central enamelled quatrefoil with eight projecting lugs (with an overall length of 54.4mm, a width of 42.5mm and a weight of 26.2g). The pendant has a loop at the apex (7.8mm deep, 3.2mm thick, 7.9mm long and 2.8mm diameter), which may have been hinged to the suspension mount, or possibly to an outer frame. Below the loop is a lug, with a double-ribbed moulding each side, below which the lug is triangular-sectioned. The peripheral lugs alternate between a leaf with undulatin…

An incomplete horse harness pendant of Medieval date (c. AD 1200-1400). The pendant is square in plan with a dome above. The suspension loop (part of which is missing in old damage) extends from the top of the dome. The front of the pendant depicts a moulded figure facing forward, probably in a sitting position, wearing a belt and holding a long object, probably a scepter. The figure is likely a king. Recesses around the figure contain white and red enamel inlay. Traces of gilding preserves on the front, particularly on the pole shaped object and near the figure’s feet. The reverse …

Copper alloy heraldic pendant of Medieval date, probably of 13th or 14th century. The pendant is shield shaped and is 35.7mm high, with an overall length (including the swivel loop) of 47.2mm. The pendant has traces of red enamel surviving between ten raised roundels. Traces of gilding survive over the roundels and the frame (Gules bezanty). The roundels are arranged in four rows, with four roundels on the top row, three on the second, two on the third and a single roundel at the bottom. The heraldic device may be connected to the La Zouche family who employed various combinations of r…
