Cast copper alloy sub-rectangular buckle frame of 15th to 17th century date. The frame has a wide pronounced lip with angled sides. The bar is thinned with a central expanded area indicating the position of the missing pin. This area would suggest the buckle had a folded sheet plate, which is now lost. The sides are concave and the outside edge of the frame is rounded.

Cast copper alloy buckle frame with central bar of Late Medieval date. Buckle consisting of rectangular inside loop, with larger oval outside loop. The moulded bar has a recess to house the now missing pin. The pin notch is evident on the frame. A buckle of the same form has been found in London (Egan & Pritchard 1991) which still retains its leather strap and illustrated the method of attachment via two rivets secured by a bar-mount through a leather strap around the rectangular part of the frame (ibid. p102). The date may be verified from a buckle found on a Late Medieval burial at …

Annular ring of copper alloy. This is likely to be a simple annular or oval buckle frame of Medieval date, probably 13th –15th century. The ring is plain with a simple notch on one face to house the pin. The frame is expanded at the point of the notch. The profile of the frame is generally ‘D’ shaped. It is often difficult to distinguish buckles of this type from simple brooches, and there remains a possibility this item is a plain annular brooch.

Recorded at the Hidden Treasure Finds Day at National Museums & Galleries of Wales. Medieval copper alloy buckle of unusual form. The buckle has broken and is distorted but is complete, except for the missing pin. The buckle has a single loop frame with a central bar. The outside edge of the frame is decorated with a projecting zoomorphic head and the inside edge has a ridged triangular projection. Together they appear to represent the head and tail of an animal, possibly a bird. The animal head design resembles buckle / brooches, such as Egan’s (1991) No 212, dated to c.1350-1400. E…

Medieval copper alloy oval buckle with separate plate, probably of mid 14th to 16th century date
The buckle comprises the oval frame (26.1mm long and 25.1mm wide) with separate folded sheet plate 30.0mm long, 15.2mm wide and 1.4mm thick). The buckle has an expanded outside edge (4.9mm wide and 4.2mm thick) with a notch for the pin. The sides are convex and the bar is offset. The pin does not survive but the presence of iron corrosion suggests an iron was used. The plate was folded around the bar with a slot for the pin. The plate was probably of rectangular form but is now corroded…
