Description The reported object is the body of a silver annular brooch; the pin is missing. The brooch has been created by filing down the rim of, and removing the centre from, a silver coin of King Henry VI of England (1422-61); this has created a flat annular brooch with inner diameter of approximately 9mm, outer diameter approximately 22mm, with a thickness of the order of 0.6mm and weight of 2.27g. Fragment from a gilt reversible annular open frame brooch of Late Medieval date, probably 15th or 16th century. The fragment is decorated on both faces. One face contained a legend with the letters G R surviving. The letters are contained within an incised border and separated by hatching. It is possible the legend may have read ‘AVEMARIAGRACIA’. The decoration on the other face is zoned, with one portion displaying a chevron design inside an incised border. The fragment does not have evidence for the pin bar or stops.

Unusual open frame brooch of triangular form. The brooch is decorated at each terminal with an animal head, possibly a dog. One side of the frame, ‘the bar’ is slightly bowed (concave) and is slighter than the other arms, it has been thinned at a central point to restrict the movement of the head of the pin (now absent). The other two arms rise gently before a bend returns to the terminal. The ears of the animal head at this terminal would have acted as lobes to restrict movement of the point of the pin.

The openwork brooch frame has a sub-circular central opening (16.4mm wide and 14.8mm long) around an zoomorphic openwork frame of D-shaped section (2.4mm thick). Annular silver stirrup brooch. The external face is decorated for half its circumference with engraved transverse grooves inlaid with niello. There is no restriction in the frame for the pin which has a short stirrup at the junction of shaft and wrap around head. The stirrup is decorated with transverse grooves, and the facets of the shaft, which has a diamond cross-section, are engraved with diagonal grooves to create a herring-bone pattern from the front. Small silver annular brooch. The silver frame is of quatrilobe form, with rounded mouldings in the angles between the lobes. The external frame width is 19.2mm; frame height 19.3mm; frame thickness 3mm. The pin is plain, with an off-centre suggestion of a division at junction of head and shaft. The front of the pin has slight bevelling; the back is flat. The head is simply wrapped around a cast restriction in the hoop. Overall pin length 21.1mm. Half of the frame from an annular silver brooch with cut from sheet metal. The external face bears engraved lettering in crudely cut Lombardic style, which appears to read: I S H [reversed h of N] A - (horizontal 'I' unless a dash) The 'S' being on its side, and the motto may be garbled. There is evidence for a restriction in the frame for a pin (now missing). The back is plain. External diameter 28mm; inner diameter 19mm; maximum thickness 1mm; weight 1.47g. The ring, which has a highly worn outer surface, has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.

Description & identification The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. Description and identification Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. The frame is decorated with continuous transverse incised bands or ridges on the front surface, some of which are inlaid with a darker material, possibly niello.
