Medieval copper alloy annular brooch of 13th or 14th century date The brooch is near-complete, missing the pin and settings. The frame is circular with an external diameter of 47.3mm (30.3mm internal). The brooch frame comprises a plain outer bevelled edge, leading to the central ring with eight raised collets. The collets are irregular and oval (up to 8.7mm by 6.2mm) and give the brooch a maximum thickness of 7.34mm. All but one of the collets contains a white calcium deposit. Between each collet, the frame is decorated with five rows of punched ring-and-dot decoration. There is some…

Fine Medieval cast open frame brooch, probably dating to the 13th – 14th century. The brooch frame is composed of an eight-pointed star, each sub-triangular component of which has two perforations. Between each segment is a raised circular collet containing a now white chalky substance. The settings have been analysed using a scanning electron microscope, indicating they are composed of calcium carbonate (M. Davies, pers. comm.). The settings originally would have been domed and the analysis implies that the collets were probably inset with mother of pearl or similar. The pin is of D…

Fragment from a gilt reversible annular open frame brooch of Late Medieval date, probably 15th or 16th century. The fragment is decorated on both faces. One face contained a legend with the letters G R surviving. The letters are contained within an incised border and separated by hatching. It is possible the legend may have read ‘AVEMARIAGRACIA’. The decoration on the other face is zoned, with one portion displaying a chevron design inside an incised border. The fragment does not have evidence for the pin bar or stops.

Open frame annular brooch, probably of 14th century date. The cast frame incorporates six collets, two each end of the pin and two opposite each other midway along the frame. The collets contained blue and white glass stones, originally domed. The four colleets around the pin alternating between blue and white, and the two frame collets are white. The frame has a ‘D’ shaped profile and is plain, except for where it is expanded at each collet and around each end of the pin housing. The separate pin is attached through a drilled hole in the frame and two of the collets restrict the p…

Unusual open frame brooch of triangular form. The brooch is decorated at each terminal with an animal head, possibly a dog. One side of the frame, ‘the bar’ is slightly bowed (concave) and is slighter than the other arms, it has been thinned at a central point to restrict the movement of the head of the pin (now absent). The other two arms rise gently before a bend returns to the terminal. The ears of the animal head at this terminal would have acted as lobes to restrict movement of the point of the pin.

Gilt copper alloy brooch of Medieval date, probably dating from the 14th century. Reversible brooch with a lozenge shaped frame, decorated on both faces. One face (raised) is decorated with two beaded lines separated by a raised line. The other face (flat) is decorated with a series of sixteen square cells (five along each side). The cells alternate between being plain and containing a quatrefoil or cross design. The frame is wasted at one corner where the pin is secured. The pin head is long to accommodate the frame, and has a square profile. The pin head is presumably of composit…

Medieval plain annular framed copper alloy brooch, probably of 13th to 15th century date. The presence of a constriction for a pin defines the frame as a brooch rather than a buckle (Egan 1991, 248). The pin has been lost, but the frame is in good condition. The frame is of near-circular section with a slight bevel on the inside edge defining a tear-shaped section. The pin restriction on the frame is narrow (1.5mm) and is 1mm in diameter.

Medieval copper alloy annular brooch frame of 13th to 14th century date The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin but the annular frame is complete (with an external diameter of 24.6mm, an internal diameter of 17.0mm and a weight of 5.0g). The frame is sub-circular to oval sectioned (3.5mm wide and 3.3mm - 3.8mm thick) and is enhanced with ribbed decoration. The decoration appears to be confined to two areas either side of a restriction for the missing pin and is present on both faces (for a length of c. 15mm). The remainder of the frame does not appear to have been decorated. The …

Medieval copper alloy brooch pin The pin is complete (with a length of 34.7mm and a weight of 2.7g) but the frame is not present. The loop is cast and closed (with a width of 7.1mm and an internal diameter of 4.6mm). Beneath the loop is a decorative rib, enhanced with notches. The pin has a collar at the top of the shaft (6.7mm diameter). The shaft appears to have been of sub-lozenge section and is widest near the loop (4.8mm maximum width), gradually narrowing to the tip. The surface is heavily-corroded with a brown-green corrosion. It is difficult to identify a brooch t…
