The reported object is a silver signet ring, now incomplete (part of hoop missing). It has a flat, circular bezel for the matrix, which has the form of a round-petalled quatrefoil within pellets in the inter-leaf spaces, within a single circular rope border. The shoulders are demarcated by simple transverse grooves, and the upper part of the hoop is decorated with triple vertical ridges and a random and unevenly punched pattern of open circles, presumably intended to represent pellets/pearls. A transverse groove and two hatched dashes below this indicate a change in the lower hoop dec…

The circular bezel is engraved with a capital letter W surrounded by three sprigs, within a single row pellet border. The bezel has a diameter of 12.3 x 13mm; the internal diameter of the hoop is 23.4mm; external hoop diameter 27,8mm; thickness of hoop 1.5mm; weight 16.29g.
In terms of form and style, the signet ring is a well known early post-medieval type. It is very similar to a brass signet ring with 'W' ensigned by a coronet, probably found in Monmouthshire and of late medieval/early modern date (Williams 1993, no. D37). On the basis of letter form and hoop style, with charact…

The fourteen coins appear to form a single group, lost or deposited in the middle of the fifteenth century. The earliest coins, of Edward III (1327-77) and Henry V (1413-22) are all considerably worn through circulation, whereas those of Henry VI (1422-61) are for the most part relatively unworn. The latest coins belong to the 'Pinecone-Mascle' issue, c.1430-34. Mostly, the weights are in accordance with the 60-grain standard of 1412, but three groats (nos 1, 6 and 14) have been clipped to weights corresponding to the 48-grain standard of Edward IV's 'Light' coinage, introduced in 14…

The find comprises five gold and twelve silver coins; the two 'stray' coins are indicated by asterisks. These two coins, like all but one of the remainder, are issues of Edward III, contemporary with the others and like them of full weight. One has seen some rough usage, but on balance the two were originally associated with the others.
There appear to be no associated contemporary finds; sherds of Roman pottery and a copper alloy coin, of 4th-century date, were recovered in the same general area.
With one exception, the coins are all post-1351 issues of Edward III (1327-77) in …
