The matrix is pointed oval in shape and has a slightly convex rear face with a rounded pierced lug at the apex and a gradually weakening rib. Crudely cast copper alloy ring. The inside of the ring contains several wear facets. External diameter c.25mm, internal diameter c.18mm, weight 5.2 grams. Crudely cast copper alloy rings like this example served numerous functions and can date from at least the medieval period to the early twentieth century. The recent suggestion that they are medieval belt fittings (Bailey 2000, 54-55) while plausible is simply one of many plausible identifications.
