Probable lead pan weight of late medieval or post medieval date
The weight is complete but corroded and is of sub-cylindrical form (21.9mm long). The sub-circular base is flat (with a diameter of 13.5mm – 14.4mm) and has a central indentation. The sides are straight and near-parallel, slightly convergent to the apex (with a diameter of 12.7mm – 13.4mm). The sides are crudely decorated with an incised cross and punched marks elsewhere. The top surface is slightly domed. The weight now weighs 31.50g, equivalent to 1.11 ounce, perhaps equivalent to one twelfth of a pound Troy (3…

Lead copper alloy weight of medieval or post medieval date
The weight is of disc form with a poorly defined flange on the upper face (with a diameter of 25.7mm and a thickness of 2.6mm – 3.2mm). The face has two deliberately incised lines, defining a cross, positioned off-centre. The weight currently weighs 11.98grams, equivalent to 0.4226 ounce and was likely to have been a ½ ounce weight, probably under the Avoirdupois or Tower systems.

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Carmarthenshire
Workflow stage: Published
Medieval copper-alloy seal matrix, probably of mid to late 13th-century date. The seal matrix is complete and is in good condition. The matrix is pointed oval in shape and has a slightly convex rear face with a rounded pierced lug at the apex and a gradually weakening rib. The surrounding inscription on the seal die is in Lombardic letters and reads: + S'CLIMENCE DAME DV BOIS (Seal of Climence, Lady of Bois). The central device depicts a standing fem…

Probable medieval lead seal matrix of 13th to 15th century date, possibly reworked
The seal matrix is of triangular form (23.6mm long, 21.5mm wide and weighing 7.1g). The rear has a loop at the apex, now damaged (4.5mm wide, 2.3mm surviving height and 3.2mm internal diameter), from which a rib descends to the base. The seal die has a floral central device within a recessed triangle, comprising eight droplet shaped petals around a central pellet. There is a flat border around the seal die but no surviving evidence for any letters, possibly suggesting that they have been deliberate…

Object type: RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Carmarthenshire
Workflow stage: Published
Crudely cast copper alloy ring. The inside of the ring contains several wear facets. External diameter c.25mm, internal diameter c.18mm, weight 5.2 grams. Crudely cast copper alloy rings like this example served numerous functions and can date from at least the medieval period to the early twentieth century. The recent suggestion that they are medieval belt fittings (Bailey 2000, 54-55) while plausible is simply one of many plausible identifications.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Carmarthenshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy Romanesque mount from a piece of devotional metalwork, possibly from a reliquary box or crucifix of 12th or 13th century date. The mount has broken at the neck and is damaged around the nose and mouth, in addition to having lost the original surface. The mount depicts the head of Christ wearing a crown with three lobes. The eyes are perforated and are likely to have held small blue glass beads. The mouth appears down-turned and there is the suggestion of facial hair above the mouth, suggesting Christ was depicted with a beard. The tear at the base of the mount is …

Medieval copper alloy zoomorphic harness hook
The cast harness hook is near-complete but heavily-corroded and with some distortion (with a length of 71.1mm and a weight of 12.2g). The head of the fitting (18mm long, 12.8mm wide and 8.3mm thick) is zoomorphic, in the form of a beast’s head, probably a dog. The beast is depicted with a grooved mouth, slightly open. The end of the snout is ridged and appears to have had grooves, as possible whiskers and indentations as nostrils. The snout has a prominent recesses groove before the ridged brow. Ovals defined by grooves at the rear…

Medieval gold finger ring probably of late 13th to 14th century date
The finger ring is complete with a distorted, flattened hoop. The circumference of the hoop suggests the ring had a diameter of approximately 16mm. The hoop has a width of 1.5mm and a thickness of 0.8mm near the base and is of flat section. The shoulders are decorated with a punched lozenge motif containing a central punched pellet and separated by punched marks at both sides. The shoulders are of sub-triangular section with a width and thickness near the bezel of 2.7mm and 1.8mm respectively. The hoop joins the soli…
