Copper alloy 'supporting-arm' brooch of Anglo-Saxon type, dating to the early to mid 5th century. This example is in good condition, although is somewhat corroded. It is missing the iron spring and pin, the turn of the catch and the rear of the side plates at the head. The base of the foot projects slightly and is decorated with a lateral groove, together with a series of transverse notches. The flat panel has been crudely bevelled by filing or cutting two notches either side. The bow is rounded and decorated at the base with two pairs of lateral grooves, now partially worn. The he…

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of late Roman or Early Medieval date. The brooch consists of the plate, knops, catchplate and hinge missing the pin. The plate is sub-quatrefoil in plan with four integrally cast knops. The knops are slightly raised from the plate and are sub-oval in plan (4.8mm long and 2.5mm wide) with thick collars across the width forming a globular head at the top of each knop (c.2mm thick). There is no visible evidence of surface decoration on the plate, so was likely plain and undecorated apart from the knops. The reverse is flat, plain and undecorat…

An incomplete cast copper alloy button brooch of early early-medieval date (c. AD 480-550). The brooch is circular in plan and slightly trapezoidal in cross-section with an upturned rim angled slightly outwards. The brooch face is set within the rim and depicts a highly stylised anthropomorphic mask with a pellet border. The eyebrows rise from the straight nose (6mm long) and curve in sweeping arches to extend just below the eyes, which are each single small round pellets. Crescentic moulds beneath the eyes may represent rounded cheeks as seen in other examples (e.g. HAMP-A4B1AB) but …

An incomplete cast copper alloy bow brooch of Early Medieval date (Early to Mid 5th century AD). The head and pin of the brooch are missing, but the remainder of the brooch is complete and in good condition, including the well-developed catchplate and disc shaped foot terminal. The bow is strongly curved and has an irregular pentagonal section, where the inner surface and sides of the bow are perpendicular to one another while the outer surface has two poorly defined facets. The top of the bow expands to form a roughly square section 4.6mm wide by 5.6mm high. The upper surface of this …
