Late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy bow brooch of Langton Down Type and dating to the 1st century AD The brooch is incomplete and is represented by the head and upper bow only with a surviving length of 23.4mm and a weight of 8.3g. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured within an open cylinder. The spring appears to be made of iron. The brooch has a width at the head of 19.8mm. The axe-head is complete, with an overall length of 105.4mm and a weight of 344.0g. The mouth of the axe is sub-rectangular, with internal dimensions of 31.1mm (depth) by 25.9mm (width). The strap was secured within a V-shaped split (12mm long), which would have been attached by two rivets near the corners, now missing. The mount is complete and was attached by two perforated and rounded side lugs (6.0mm long, 6.6mm wide and 1.8mm thick), and secured by separate rivets through carefully drilled holes (2.2mm diameter). The mount is three-dimensional, of rounded conical form and with a hollow interior. The sides of the cone are slightly convex. Cast copper alloy Colchester brooch. The pin and half the bilateral spring (originally of eight coils) is missing. The external chord is pressed forward and secured by a forward facing hook on top of the head. The end of the chord hook is embellished with two transverse grooves. The spring is obscured by two delicately moulded wings, both of which are embellished with longitudinal ridges. Penannular bracelet terminal fragment in the style of a snake-head. The style of the snake-head may be regarded as naturalistic. The terminal is lozenge-shaped, with its widest point at the position of the eyes. Fragment of copper alloy sheet, openwork decorative mount. The curvilinear mount it broken across its two rebated fixing holes and its other extreme. The upper surface of the mount is decorated with an incised design consisting of three infilled three-sided curvilinear panels. Dimensions 35.1 x 25.8 x 1.5mm weighing 4.9g. The two fixing holes (diameter c.2.5mm) are surrounded by circular rebatements (diameter c.7mm) which accommodated the heads of the fixing studs or rivets.
