Object type: FIXTURES AND FITTINGS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy, lozenge-shaped mount with a single, integral rivet. The front of the mount is decorated with a series of moulded pellets which form a decorative border and a central flower design. Possible traces of tinning adhere to the surface of the mount. Dimensions 24.5mm x 16mm. Although difficult to date precisely, the mount is paralleled by two examples recovered from fourteenth century contexts in London cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 200, nos.1078-1079.

Record ID: NMGW3352
Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Enamelled, shield-shaped horse harness pendant. Type I (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). The pendant is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with an integral suspension loop, which is now slightly bent. It is decorated with a heraldic device made up of three chevrons. Although ancient enamels can change their colour as a consequence of burial, microscopic study suggests that the recessed chevrons may have originally been decorated with red enamel. The pendant is corroded and its sinister side is damaged. Height 43mm, width 27mm, thickness 2mm.

Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Circular-shaped base of a possible, lead, or lead alloy, pilgrim ampulla. One side of the casting is plain, while the other may have been decorated with a simple design set within a circular border. The top of the casting is open having a deep concave mouth. The opening is not the result of modern damage; however, it is uncertain whether it is an original feature (in which case the tentative identification as an ampulla is incorrect) or the result of careful cutting. The casting was damaged during recovery. Diameter 31.5mm, thickness 8.5mm. Possibly medieval.

Copper alloy sub-rectangular mount, one side of which is plain and the other of which is decorated with an incised letter T on a hatched background [the letter T is a Middle English sacred Christian monogram/symbol representing the tau cross of cross of St Anthony). The upper corners of the mount form right angles while the lower corners are rounded giving the sub-rectangular mount a near shield-shaped form. Both the surfaces of the mount have been coated with a white metal, possibly tin or silver, and possible traces of inlaid niello are visible in the incised decoration. There is no …

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a copper alloy horse harness pendant with an integral suspension loop and curved, sloping shoulders. Only a corroded fragment of the pendant survives and it is not possible to identify its original form with certainty; however, the extant sloping shoulders suggest that it may be an example of a Type V, quatrefoil pendant (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). No evidence of decoration survives; however, the pendant is perforated by a sub-rectangular fixing hole c.11mm below the suspension loop suggesting that it may have been embellished with an appliqué mount or stud. Cruciform cast copper alloy fitting decorated on one side with an incised fleur-de-lis design against a hatched background and on the other side with an incised central checkerboard design made up of nine squares with a simple border against a hatched background. The fitting forms an equal-sided Maltese type cross, remnants of a flash line suggest that it was cast in a two-part mould. A central perforation runs through the longitudinal (as defined by the fleur-de-lis motif) axis of the fitting. The perforation is slightly worn at the base of the fitting. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Plain ring which is cast from a copper alloy and has a near plano-convex section with its inner edge being flat while its outside consists of a raised central cordon with a distinct medial ridge and short flanged edges. The flanged edges of the ring are badly damaged but show no sign of preferential wear which could be expected of the ring was an item of harness. It is large for a finger ring, having an internal diameter of 21.5mm and an external diameter of 28mm; however, the inside is worn smooth in a manner consistent with the wear on a finger ring which has been removed and replac…

Cast copper alloy vessel, leg, sub-trapezoidal in section. The outer edge and sides are decorated with longitudinal grooves. The leg tapers towards its rounded base. The weight of the vessel leg suggests that the copper alloy was leaded. Probably the leg of either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is not possible because the form of vessel legs remained similar from the late medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95). Length 46.5mm, maximum width 31.5mm, maximum thickness 20mm. Thirteenth to seventeenth century.

Cast copper alloy purse bar. The shield-shaped central block is incised on one side with the legend IHS, and on the other side it is inscribed with the letter T [The legend IHS is Middle English in origin from the late Latin representing the Greek IHS as an abbreviation of Ièsous 'Jesus'. It is used in both manuscripts and as a symbolic/ornamental monogram. It is often taken as an abbreviation of various Latin phrases: Iesus Hominum Salvator 'Jesus saviour of men', In Hoc Signo (vinces) 'In this sign (thou shall conquer)' and In Hac Salus 'In this (cross) is salvation'. Octagonal-sectioned tapering lead, or lead-alloy, weight. The weight is pinched and perforated at its narrowest end for suspension. Possibly for use with a steelyard. Cast copper alloy purse bar. The moulded sub-spherical terminals of the circular-sectioned bar are embellished with horizontal grooves, while the central sub-rectangular boss is decorated on one side with two presumably engraved oblique grooves which, with the base of the boss, form a triangular panel. One arm of the purse bar is bent upwards about a third of the way along its length. The original form of the swivelling attachment is not certain. At present it does not form the usual loop, but is T-shaped suggesting that the purse bar is possibly a variant from of ward-Perkin's Type B8…

Diameter 17-18mm, thickness 5mm, weight 7.8 grams. Although a fairly common find type little is known about the date, places of issue, function and extent of circulation of lead tokens. Lead tokens have been variously identified as trade tokens, counters, pilgrimage souvenirs, hop or farm tokens, tavern tokens, merchant seals and gaming pieces (Dean 1977, 141-142).
