A near complete cast copper alloy and iron sprung Birdlip type brooch of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date (c. 30-60 AD). The brooch is undoubtedly of Birdlip Type but is not well paralleled in Mackreth (2011) and appears to lack the typical upturned “beak/tongue”. The brooch is in good condition and nearly intact- the only missing element is the iron pin and spring mechanism, attested solely by iron corrosion product left on the lug. The object is zoomorphic, cast in the form of the stylised head of a beast with the lower jaw cut away in order to fit onto a vessel rim. The button is circular in plan, with a central 14.8mm diameter domed boss in the centre, with a flat circular rim 1.1mm thick.
