Description & identification The reported object is a small silver annular brooch with integral pin (frame misshapen. The frame is decorated with continuous transverse incised bands or ridges on the front surface, some of which are inlaid with a darker material, possibly niello. On the reverse frame are four groups of evenly spaced bands. The dagger-like pin is attached by a wraparound head, decorated with three irregularly spaced parallel grooves. An incomplete distorted copper alloy needle of uncertain date, likely Medieval to Post Medieval. The needle is missing the upper half of its head, which is broken across the eye. The needle shank has an oval section tapering to flattened oval towards the head, which has a flat section 1.5mm thick. Description & identification The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. A complete wrought iron horseshoe of late Medieval to early Post Medieval date (c. AD 1270-1600). The horseshoe has a broad web of 30.3mm tapering towards the 8.9-7.8mm pointed heels, which both have double folded calkins. The 56.5mm wide internal aperture has a pointed oval shape. The seal is conical in form with a circular die and an unfaceted back/handle ending in a break below the suspension loop. The die is heavily worn, with an illegible circumferential inscription running from c. 2 o’clock to c. 10 o’clock on the die. A near-complete cast lead alloy ampulla of Medieval date (c.AD 1200-1400). The ampulla is closed at the mouth, which has a moulded rim (27.9mm wide). The sub-rectangular and slightly-flaring neck curves expands slightly again to the round body (32.8mm wide). The front is decorated with uneven and poorly executed incised lines mimicking a scallop shell. The other side was also likely decorated but the design has been damaged by surface corrosion. An incomplete copper alloy Medieval seal matrix of 13th century date. The seal matrix is complete except for its top end point, suspension loop and raised reverse rib. This large seal matrix is of flat type and is pointed oval (vesica) in plan, though missing the upper point to damage. A complete Medieval copper alloy buckle, dating from c. AD 1250 to 1400. The buckle frame is circular in plan and measures 41.69mm in diameter. In cross section, the frame is oval and has no constriction for the pin, it measures 4.78mm wide and 4.22mm deep. The pin is oval in cross section and has an open loop attaching it to the frame. It is 46.31mm long and 4.75mm wide, narrowing to 3.71mm, and ending in a blunt point. The buckle has a grey patina with areas of blackening and pale copper-green corrosion.
