Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy buckle with integral plate, of 15th century date.
The buckle is incomplete and fragmentary, now in two fragments and missing part of the outside of the frame (with a length of 35mm and a weight of 4.6g). The frame was of oval or circular form (with a diameter of 23mm) and of oval section (3.3mm wide and 3.8mm thick). Heavy corrosion on the frame has removed any trace of possible decoration. The pin is looped through a slot behind the frame. The ferrous pin is comparatively short (at 17mm) and is of D-shaped section, with straight sides, gradually converging…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval lead seal matrix of 12th or 13th century date
The seal matrix is incomplete and distorted (with a weight of 17.0g) and was of flat circular form. The break along the seal does not appear to have been a deliberate cut. The remnants of a lug are evident below the apex on the rear. At the centre is an oval perforation (7.2mm x 4.5mm), seemingly deliberate and presumably secondary the seal’s use. The seal die was circular (of 35.5mm diameter and 3.0mm thick) but the damage has made the seal difficult to interpret and read. The central perforation and surrounding corrosion …

The reported object is a small silver annular brooch. The silver frame is of flattened rectangular cross-section. One face is decorated with an incised zig-zag pattern; the other face has a crudely incised, garbled inscription copying Lombardic letter forms. (I, A, N and D can be identified).
The pin shaft is missing.
External frame diameter 20.03mm; internal diameter 13.1mm; frame thickness 0.7mm. The brooch weight is 1.18g.
In terms of size and design, the brooch is of thirteenth- to mid-fourteenth-century form. The garbled inscription may be an attempt to copy a talismanic…

Medieval copper alloy oval buckle with separate plate, probably of mid-14th to 16th century date
The buckle comprises the oval frame (24.2mm long and 27.1mm wide) with separate folded sheet plate (33.3mm long, 15.8mm wide and 1.4mm thick). The buckle has an expanded outside edge (5.5mm wide and 4.5mm thick), which in convex (8.6mm deep) and has a notch for the pin. The sides are also convex and the bar is offset and narrowed. The pin does not survive but the presence of iron corrosion suggests an iron pin was used. The plate is folded around the bar (7.6mm deep) with a slot for the…
