The strap-end is in the form of a moulded rod, expanding slightly to form a bifurcated shank. It is broken across the hole for the rivet that would have secured it to the end of a leather strap.
Functionally strap-ends existed to reinforce the free ends of leather belts and straps, such as the end of a belt opposite from the buckle, and in some instances to provide some extra weight to help the strap or belt-end hang properly. However, there was also a strong decorative element to them.
Similar strap-ends, made of copper alloy, have been found on Roman…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch fragment of indeterminate type, probably of T-shaped or allied types and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is represented by the fragmentary head only (with a surviving length of 16.5mm, a surviving depth of 6.7mm and a weight of 4.3g). The incomplete head (with a width of 17.7mm) had a covered copper alloy axis bar, possibly originally in tubular wings but no longer surviving. The head narrows to the top of the bow with a D-shaped section (7.0mm wide and 3.5mm thick). There is the suggestion of a curved moulding above the break, possibly flankin…

Roman gold finger ring of keeled type.
A plain sharply faceted, almost triangular in section, hoop widens into triangular shoulders with an openwork design down both edges, now much worn, but probably originally a stylized foliate design. Between the shoulders is a prominent battered oval, or possibly octagonal, bezel containing a dark blue Nicolo, or Nicolo paste, intaglio. The intaglio portrays a standing male figure looking left with objects held in each hand, probably a depiction of Mercury holding a caduceus (a staff with two snakes winding around it) and a money-bag (Henig 19…

A hooked fitting of unknown completeness, potentially from a harness junction loop, likely of Roman date. The hook has a concave inner surface and a convex outer one, with a rounded tip and sides that flare toward the base. The hook is cast integrally with the rest of the object, of which only a fragment remains as a flat plate projecting from the base of the hook. Every edge of this plate is formed by a break, leaving the original form of the object unclear. A small amount of decoration is visible at the lowest point of the plate in the form of two parallel grooves running perpendicul…

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Headstud type, dating to the Roman period (c. 75-200 AD). The brooch is heavily worn and difficult to identify a subtype. The brooch is missing its foot, catchplate, mechanism, pin, much of the wings and the composite headstud itself, while the surface of the bow is heavily damaged.
The head of the bow has two wings with an incomplete width of 17.6mm, incomplete height of 6.1mm and an incomplete depth of 3.3mm. The reverse of the wings is broken nearly flat, with the original surface remaining only as a shallow groove (likely holding the axis …

Silver bezel of a finger ring containing an orangey-red, cornelian, intaglio. The edge of the bezel is decorated by a line of triangles running round its bottom edge and the back by an engraved floral pattern. The intaglio depicts a winged male figure, probably Cupid, a large bunch of grapes and an animal, probably a hare. The intaglio would appear to be Roman, depicting Cupid, a bunch of grapes and a hare. The same combination can be seen on an intaglio from Bath (Henig 1978, 200 no.113) where cupid is holding a bunch of grapes and a hare is jumping up to reach it. On the present int…

Ten copper halfpence of which seven certainly of William III (1694-1701) and the others probably the same reign. Two are dated 1698 and 1699; remaining dates illegible.
All of these coins show a good deal of circulation wear and it is likely that the group was lost or deposited during the middle or later years of the eighteenth century.

Description
Four silver sixpences of Elizabeth I of England (1558-1603), dated 1567, 1574 and 1583 (found by Mr Small) and 1567 (found by Mr Williams). The coins display moderate amounts of wear through use, consistent with their having been lost or deposited at around the same time. Elizabeth’s silver coinage was of a consistently high fineness, in excess of 90% Ag.
Discussion
Silver coins of Elizabeth are found fairly regularly and the sixpence is a commonly-encountered denomination, playing a significant part in most coin hoards from the later sixteenth and sevente…

A probable Neolithic stone axehead roughout of Neolithic date, c.4000-2500 BC. The object is in the early stages of shaping, with scars from large removals on both faces and does not appear to be a flake but rather a rock in the process of being shaped. The bifacial object is broadly sub-oval in plan, with an irregular lozenge section. The shaping has not progressed to a point where it is possible to discern a blade or butt end, though one end is more pointed that the other, which has a flat, angled end formed by excess material ending in a hinged fracture on one face. One face of the …
