Roman iron bow brooch, of Dolphin or Polden Hill type and dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch has corroded and none of the surface detail is now discernible. One of the wings survive, but it is unclear whether the wings terminated with plates (Polden Hill) or remained open (Dolphin). At the top of the head there is a forward facing claw to tension the missing spring. The head projects slightly before the characteristic dolphin shape of the bow. The bow is of circular section and the foot of the bow has the remnants of the corroded catch-plate.

Head and upper bow fragment from a Roman brooch, probably a Dolphin variant of 1st century AD date. The brooch is likely to have employed a spring mechanism, secured in an unusual arrangement with an integral central pierced lug, possibly with a claw or lug on the head to tension the multiple-wound spring. The remnants of the copper alloy axis bar survive either side of the central lug. The wings were open and have lost their terminals making it difficult to determine if they were open-ended or had terminal lugs. The brooch fragment is heavily eroded and little of the surface detail su…

Lower bow and foot fragment from a Roman bow brooch of indeterminate type. The lower bow has an oval section and was decorated with a raised central rib and decorated with short incised transverse lines. The bow has a gentle curve and tapers to the foot. The eroded remnants of the catch-plate are discernible on the rear of the bow. The curved profile of the fragment suggests a Colchester-derivative brooch, perhaps of Dolphin or Polden Hill type.
