A contemporary copy of a CERES AVGVSTA type dupondius of Claudius I, 41-54 AD. Th coin could therefore date to any time after the beginning reign of Claudius I. The coin is worn and weighs 10.17g. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified to a mint.

Copper alloy hilt guard probably of first century AD date. It is a plain example of Piggott (1950) Group IVB (crown) hilt, with a groove round its middle providing the only surface decoration. The closest parallels are an example from Newstead (Curle 1911, pl.XXXIV.10; MacGregor 1976, no.152) and a piece of unknown provenance in Perth Museum (MacGregor 1976, no.159). Although at 82mm long it is rather larger than most published examples, which in general do not exceed 60mm in length. There is, however, a piece of similar shape and size from Waddon Hill, Dorset, published as ‘the top …

Roman copper alloy hinged T-shaped brooch with narrow rounded bow. Only the upper bow and tubular wings survive, with the catch-plate and pin missing. The brooch has eroded and little detail survives. There is the suggestion that the bow tapers from a central rib, and there is a central crest on the head.

Roman copper alloy hinged T-shaped brooch. The brooch is near complete, with only the pin absent. The wings are short and tubular and appear to hold an iron axis bar. The upper portion of the bow holds a rectangular panel with central triangular and lozenge shaped cells, the enamel no longer survives, but the remnants suggests a blue enamel. The remainder of the rectangular panel, outside the central cells is now pale grey colour. Beneath the panel is a pair of ‘leaves’. The lower area of the bow gently narrows to a delicate foot. The lower bow tapers from a slight central rib to a…

A copper-alloy plate brooch, possibly of Roman date. The brooch is oval in shape with an oval recess, probably for a conical glass setting. The brooch is gilded and carries two zones of decoration divided by a raised rib. The outer area is decorated with S-shaped scrolls and the inner area with lozenges between chevrons. The back of the brooch is flat and has a damaged perforated plate to house the spring and a catch plate, which has been bent against the back. Much of the surface has eroded, but the gilding survives comparatively well.

Roman bow brooch of unusual form and type. The brooch has a hinge mechanism enclosed within short wings. The head of the bow is arched with a D-shaped cross section, which gradually thins as it approaches an integral moulding of circular cross section with slight side knobs. The bow after this is gently concave in profile and gradually tapers in before expanding back out at a rounded moulded foot. The bow is flat except for the catch plate, which begins as a low rib. The pin is present and of circular cross section with a flattened head. Decoration on the bow is both cast and incised,…

Upper fragment of a cast Roman bow brooch of unusual type. The brooch was hinged and the upper portion of the pin survives. The wings are wide with a flat upper surface and a rounded back. The wings carry low curved moulding near the terminals, which are now fairly eroded. The surviving area of the bow suggests a rounded cross design, with the apex of the bow running into the wings defining an arc across the wings and forming two curving triangular cells on the wings above the bow. Bi-conical lead steelyard weight. Fairly squat example with the lower part in particular being more spherical than conical, in fact the very bottom is flat, allowing the weight to sit upright. Traces of an iron suspension loop survive at the top. The general form is typical of a Roman steelyard weight but at over 900g it is a rather heavy example (300-400g being more typical) and it is difficult to find a close parallel for it. Plain, function items, such as this, are always difficult to date in isolation, so while a Roman date is the most likely a more modern date must remain a possib…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
The oval bezel of a Roman copper alloy finger ring with remains of a blue glass setting (intaglio), 13 by 9 mm. No meaningful trace of a design can be seen and the ring may well have been burnt at some point. Glass settings with an impressed design were a cheaper alternative to the individually carved stone intaglios. Rings of this type are difficult to date but they appear to have been most common in the third century, with little, or no, evidence for their use before the latter part of the second century (Henig 1974, 35).

Copper alloy trumpet brooch with a large oval head, now somewhat battered at the edge. This is surmounted by a cross bar for a solid chain loop, which does not itself survive. The axial bar of the spring is held by a lug at either end and is probably iron, to judge by the presence of iron corrosion around the spring. Bow decorated by a large, prominent button, fairly crudely moulded with a double rib above and below. Lower part of the bow is plain apart from a narrow groove along each edge. The foot knob is of disc form with a circular ridge decorating its base. The catch plate extends…
