The hinge mechanism is positioned on the reverse of the top knop, which is broken and missing appx. half of the height in an old break (surviving height is 7.7mm, 3.7mm wide). Directly across the plate is another knop which accommodates the catchplate on the reverse (survi…

The brooch is comparatively light and is near-complete but is distorted (with a distorted length of 63.3mm a depth of 16.8mm and a weight of 10.0g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism around a copper alloy axis bar and secured at the ends of the wings. The chord was tensioned above the head by a lug. The wing terminals are angled slightly inwards (and the wings have a width of 19.6mm). The fronts o…

Fragment of a flat, equal-ended type of plate brooch consisting of a symmetrically arranged, lozenge-shaped plate and one moulded terminal of 'acorn' form. The lozenge-shaped plate is divided into five separate panels; that is a wide central rib, flanked on either side by a narrow strip, which is in turn flanked by a triangular panel. Presumably these five panels originally contained enamel, none of which now survives. Part of a small catch-plate remains on the reverse of the terminal. Surviving length 25.5mm, width of lozenge-shaped plate 22mm, weight 3.0grams. Probably second century…

The wings are decorated with transverse and diagonal grooves as well as a waisted moulding towards their ends and a terminal moulding embellished with transverse incised lines. The wings accommodate a pivot for the hinged pin mechanism. Flat, comma-like mouldings or "appendages" are present either side of the bow adjacent to the wings. The bow, which is widest at the head and tapers to a point, forms one continuous…

A copper-alloy plate brooch, possibly of Roman date. The brooch is oval in shape with an oval recess, probably for a conical glass setting. The brooch is gilded and carries two zones of decoration divided by a raised rib. The outer area is decorated with S-shaped scrolls and the inner area with lozenges between chevrons. The back of the brooch is flat and has a damaged perforated plate to house the spring and a catch plate, which has been bent against the back. Much of the surface has eroded, but the gilding survives comparatively well.
