An incomplete copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman sestertius of Claudius I (AD 41-54), dating to the period AD 43 - c.50 (Reece Period 2). Uncertain reverse type. Uncertain mint. This coin is a British provincial imitation, which has been countermarked PROB, short for Probatum meaning "approved". PROB is a British variant of the abbreviation. This countermark gave official sanction to the coin by the Roman government or its legal representatives (Baker 1984, 54). A contemporary copy of a CERES AVGVSTA type dupondius of Claudius I, 41-54 AD. Th coin could therefore date to any time after the beginning reign of Claudius I. The coin is worn and weighs 10.17g. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified to a mint.
