Flat bow of small curvature expanding towards the missing foot. The bow is decorated with fluted reeding, which runs along its entire length and terminates at the moulded transverse rib located at the bow’s junction with the spring-cover. The catch plate is deformed and partly missing but contained a single perforation of indeterminate shape. The cylindrical spring-cover is open along a slit on the back of the brooch and at either end. Only two incomplete fragments of the brooch survive. The bow has been bent through ninety degrees, although it is uncertain whether this occurred…

Derivative trumpet-headed brooch of the disc and trumpet type. The bilateral, six coil, spring is accommodated in a recessed hollow set in the rear of the head while the axis bar is held in place by two perforated lugs on either side of the head (type N cf. Hattatt 1982, 49). The bow is straight, with a raised disc set mid-way along its length and terminates in a pseudo-penannular loop. The brooch is incomplete: the chord, pin, part of the solid catch-plate, the lugs set either side of the mid-bow disc and the fixed chain loop surmounting the head of the brooch are missing. The surface…

County: the Vale of Glamorgan

Discoidal perforated stone. Diameter 24mm, thickness 14mm, internal diameter 5mm, weight 12.5 grams. Although conventionally identified as spindle whorls, perforated stone weights like this example could have been used for other functions such as fishing or net weights (Manning et al. 1995, 251). Roman spindle whorls are usually made from sherds of pottery; however, examples made from lead, brass coins, jet, bone and stone are also known (cf. Wheeler 1930, 106-107; Manning et al. 1995). A close parallel is recorded from Roman Aldborough (Bishop 1996, 32, no.173, fig.17); however, alth…

Irregular discoidal perforated stone. Diameter 22.5-24mm, thickness 12mm, internal diameter 5.5mm, weight 8.9 grams. The slightly irregular form of this example suggests that an identification as a spindle whorl may be somewhat problematic and this perforated stone could have been used as a fishing or net weight (cf. Manning et al. 1995, 251).

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small gold, or gold alloy, ring of keeled form with notched shoulders, which form the upper part of the hoop, projecting at an angle to the bezel. The bezel contains a plain, sub-circular boss and, on one side only, a perforated sub-semicircular flange, which gives the bezel a decidedly asymmetrical appearance. The lower part of the hoop is plano-convex in section. The ring is distorted and worn, possibly as a result of cleaning. There are no discernible hallmarks or other features. External diameter 15-16mm, internal diameter 11-12.5mm, weight 2.8 grams. The ring is too small to be a …

Cast copper alloy two-piece bow brooch. The chord, pin, lower half of the bow and catch-plate are missing. The brooch contains a bilateral spring held by a copper ally axis bar through a cast lug on the back of the trumpet head with the chord below and free, just pressing against the back of the head of the brooch (cf. Type G Hattat 1982, 49, table 2). The upper part of the lug does not extend above the back of the head. The decoration on the middle of the bow is not of the usual "acanthus" form, but instead consists of a wide notch. Other decoration on the brooch consists of curvilin…
